The Best Christmas Party Ever

Yoongi was nervous.  He’d asked Sophie to be his date to the Christmas party.  Why had he done that?  He had been dreading going to this party, and now he had to socialize with his date too, right?  He stared at himself in the mirror before straightening his tie.  He sighed.  Tonight would be a long night.

Yoongi picked her up at 6:30 sharp.  As they drove to the office, she couldn’t help but be jealous of Yoongi.  His coat looked warm.  She’d made the stupid decision of wearing a dress that was way too tight and way too short.  Not only did she feel self-conscious, but she was also cold.  Hopefully, the building would be warm.

She discovered ten minutes later that the building was, in fact, warm.  But the air outside had not been.  She’d nearly frozen just walking into the building.  Yoongi had noticed.  He’d wordlessly draped his coat over her shoulders and led her inside.

The building was packed.  Of course, it was.  The company was huge, and many of the people who worked here were big on Christmas.  Yoongi was not among those who actively celebrated Christmas, but he wouldn’t crash anyone else’s happy spirit because of that.  And maybe having Sophie with him tonight made things a little better.

He looked down at her.  She was standing next to him, still shaking.  Why on earth had she worn such a short dress?  It was definitely below freezing outside tonight.  He shook his head before heading to find the nearest waiter for a drink.

He returned to Sophie’s side a minute later with two glasses of water.  She didn’t seem to be the kind of person to drink alcohol, and he didn’t want a headache tonight.

“Thank you,” she said as he handed her the glass.

“Why did you wear something so…short?” Yoongi asked, voicing his question.

“Um…what else was I supposed to wear?  I have nothing that goes past my knees that could be worn to a party like this.”

Yoongi looked her up and down before taking a sip of his water.  Women’s fashion made no sense to him.  Why would anyone want to suffer just to wear an article of clothing?

Yoongi soon discovered there wasn’t much to do at this party.  It was mostly just standing around and talking to people he didn’t want to talk to.  He was so glad he’d brought Sophie along with him.  It gave him an excuse to avoid conversation with a lot of people.  So, he spent most of the night getting to know her.

“So, when did Mae and Chan get married?” Sophie asked. “I mean, I heard they were dating in February, but the next thing I knew, they were married!”

“I was wondering the same thing, honestly,” Yoongi replied.  How did Sophie manage to make him feel so comfortable talking? “I didn’t even know they were engaged, and Chan’s office is right next to mine!  I see him almost every day!”

Sophie laughed. “What are you doing for New Years?”

“Um…not much.  I usually get together with a few of my friends and we’ll play games or something until midnight.  But that’s about it.”

“Oh…I see.”

“Why do you ask?”

“Well, my cousin is throwing a party, and I wanted to take someone with me.  But if you have plans, it’s all right.”

“Is this an invitation?”

Sophie looked up at him. “I mean…if you want it.  But what about your friends?”

Yoongi shrugged. “We don’t all make it every year anyways.  I’m sure missing one year would be all right.”

What had he just signed up for?
