“Who is it?” Nani asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t recognize the number.”
Nani peeked over Tae’s shoulder. She at least recognized the area code. It was the Chicago area code.
“Answer it!”
“Are you kidding? It could be some weirdo who’s stalking me and somehow got my number!”
Nani snatched the phone from his hand. “I’ll do it then.” Before Tae could stop her, she clicked ‘accept’ and put the phone on speaker. “Hello?”
There was a brief pause before the voice on the other end of the line sounded. “Nani, why do you have Tae’s phone?”
All three of them breathed a sigh of relief. It was Jinie.
“A better question is, where did you go? You freaked us all out!” Tae exclaimed.
Nani nearly jumped. She’d never heard Tae so angry before. There was a long silence before anyone spoke.
“I’m sorry…something caught my eye…so I decided to go look at it. And then…I somehow got lost. And then my phone died.”
Tae let out an exasperated sigh and buried his face in his hands.
“Where are you?” Nani asked.
“At the front desk. I asked to borrow the phone.”
“Tell her I’ll be down there in two minutes.”
Nani looked up to see Tae with his coat already on. He was tugging on one of his shoes. How had he moved so fast?
“Um…Jinie, Tae will be down there in a couple minutes. I’m going to give him his phone back now.”
“Ok.”
Tae was out the door not even ten seconds later, and Nani and Jimin were left alone. In a hotel room.
“Are you ok?” Jimin asked.
Nani nodded. “I am now. I was really worried…”
Jimin patted her shoulder. “It’s understandable. She’s your best friend. I don’t know what I’d do if Tae disappeared.”
Nani silently walked over to the window. She wasn’t sure what to say now, and the view from here was stellar. She could see almost half the city from here.
“It’s really beautiful, isn’t it?”
Nani nodded again. “It is. I’ve never seen the city from this high up.”
They stood in silence for a few minutes, just watching the sky. Somehow, they could see some of the stars from here. It wasn’t many, but it was more than they could usually see in the bright city of Chicago. Nani smiled. If she forgot that Jinie had disappeared for nearly an hour tonight, she would say tonight was one of the best nights of her life so far.
She turned to look up at Jimin. It was more of a simple glance. He wasn’t much taller than her. She glanced down momentarily, her eyes meeting his lips. She was quick to return her gaze to the sky.
“You think Tae’s lecturing Sujin yet?” Jimin asked with a chuckle.
Of course. Jimin wanted to talk about their friends again.
“Why would he be lecturing her?”
“When he’s scared, he has two different moods he’ll go into. He’s either clingy or passionate. Generally, he’s more passionate with people younger than him, so…”
Nani laughed. She could just see Jinie looking like a kicked puppy as Tae told her off for disappearing on them.
“I see,” she laughed. “What about you? How does he react to you?”
Jimin was silent for a few moments before finally responding. “He’s passionate. I’ve gotten more than one lecture from him,” he laughed. “You’d think he was the older one.”
