In Our Next Lives – Chapter 19: Confliction

It was time.  They were finally telling their parents about their breakup.  And Nia was not looking forward to it.  She crawled out of bed before the sun had even risen on Saturday morning.  She didn’t bother opening her curtains before she headed out to the kitchen to make coffee.

Somehow, she and Hobi had managed to keep their breakup a secret for a few weeks, but they knew someone was bound to ask at some point.  After all, they had been about to start planning the wedding.  His parents had wanted them to wait until Hobi took over the company, and his father was finally passing it down to him in a few weeks.  But now they had to break the news to them that the wedding wasn’t going to happen.

“Nia?  Why are you awake so early?”

Nia jumped in surprise.  She spun around to find Taehyung walking into the kitchen.  His hair was tousled, and Yeontan was sound asleep in his arms.  Had he heard her come out here?

“No reason,” she assured him. “I just was awake, so I thought I’d get out of bed.”

He nodded and set Yeontan down on one of the kitchen chairs.

“You and Hoseok are meeting with your parents today, right?”

Nia nodded.

“How do you think it’ll go?”

Nia let out a long breath. “I don’t know.  I know my parents won’t be happy.  Especially my mom.  She was…very happy when Hobi and I announced our engagement.”

“Nia.”

He didn’t continue speaking for a few moments, so she prompted him.

“What?”

“Are you breaking up with him because you feel betrayed?  Or is it because you’re not in love with him?  Because if you are in love with him, you shouldn’t let him go.”

Nia looked up at him in surprise. “I…I don’t know.”

“Think about it then.  Because if you really do love him, you’ll regret breaking up with him.”

“Why are you asking me this?”

“Because…I know what it feels like to be left by someone I love.  And I wouldn’t want anyone else to ever feel that way.”

Nia spent breakfast pondering over what Taehyung had said.  After their conversation, he’d disappeared.  He’d said he was taking Yeontan for a walk, but he had yet to return.

Now she was sitting on the back porch wrapped in a blanket.  And staring up at the cloudy sky.  It was threatening to rain.  And it made her wonder if it was trying to tell her something.  Did today’s weather reflect someone’s mood?  It wasn’t her.  She was nervous, but not sad.

A cold wind was blowing through the air now, but she didn’t care.  She continued to sit on the porch and stare at the clouds.  Maybe Taehyung was right.  Maybe she shouldn’t call off the engagement.  Maybe she shouldn’t have moved out of Hobi’s house.

But…at the same time, she now knew what she was feeling towards Hobi wasn’t love.  At least, not romantic love.  And now that her memories were coming back, she was starting to feel more and more for Taehyung.  She didn’t know what to do.  But she knew one thing for sure.  She wasn’t in love with Hobi.  And they needed to tell their parents that the engagement was off.  So that was the next thing she needed to do.
