She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t even frowning. In fact, she looked void of any emotion. But one look into her eyes told him that something was wrong. He wasn’t sure what it was, but he didn’t need to know. Without hesitation, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms. She accepted gratefully, leaning her head on his chest and letting out a soft sigh.
“Are you all right?” He whispered ever so softly into her hair.
She nodded. It was the slightest movement, but he felt it.
“All right.”
He just stood there for a moment, feeling her relax slowly. Her hands were gently clasped behind his back, as if they’d fall if they weren’t linked. He could tell she was tired. And with good reason. Today had been a long day.
“Can we go home?” she asked in a light voice.
“We can. Should I ask someone to grab our stuff?”
“Yes, please…”
Without warning, he bent down and scooped her up. He could tell she was too tired to walk. She nearly went limp in his arms the moment he picked her up.
“Thank you.” Once again, her voice was almost a whisper.
“Of course. You’re exhausted. Are you sure you’re ok?”
“It’s just been a long day,” she mumbled into his shoulder.
He nodded. “It has been. Did you sleep ok last night?”
She was silent, which concerned him. He looked down to see she was sound asleep. He smiled. She really was exhausted. Hopefully they could get home soon. She needed to sleep in a real bed.
It’s Tae, it just seems like a Tae thing to say and do.
