Loud-Mouthed Toddlers

Hobi marched into the library on Saturday afternoon.  He and Joon had a group project with a few other kids in their class that they had to get done in the next week, and they weren’t wasting any time starting.  Joon had come much earlier, and now as Hobi looked around he realized that that was because of a certain someone meeting him here.

Macy.  Red-head, class nerd, and most importantly, Joon’s crush for the past eight months.  Sure, she was pretty, but Hobi wasn’t sure what Joon saw in her.  Maybe it was their mutual love for studying.

“Hey, guys,” Hobi greeted as he set his bag on the floor and plopped into the seat next to Joon.

“We should’ve met at a café,” Macy sighed. “Andrew said he’s bringing a bunch of snacks.  We’re sure to get kicked out of here.”

“Why don’t we move to the café a few blocks down, then?” Hobi asked.

Well, that’s exactly what they ended up doing.  Andrew got the memo too late, it seemed, because he came running in ten minutes after they got there complaining that he’d searched the whole library for them before bothering to check his phone.

Their last group member, Kyleigh, took even longer to get there.  The first thing out of her mouth when she sat down was, “thank goodness we’re meeting here instead of the library.  They have the best espressos here.”

That’s when thing started to get awkward.  It seemed Andrew and Kyleigh didn’t even want to help with the project, and Joon and Macy kept making awkward eye contact.  That left Hobi with his head buried in his books as he attempted to actually get something done.

Kyleigh and Andrew left about two hours into the session, so Macy and the twins were now alone.

“Are you guys busy tonight?  My parents aren’t home tonight so maybe we could go to the arcade or something.”

“Um…I’ll ask our dad,” Hobi offered before pulling out his phone.

“Can Joon and I go to the arcade tonight?  Or are we doing something for dinner?”

“Your grandpa and Chaeha are both coming over for dinner tonight, so I’d like it if you were both home in half an hour.”

“Ok.  Macy said her parents aren’t home tonight, so can we bring her for dinner?”

This text caught Jin’s attention.

“Sure.  Feeding one more mouth shouldn’t be too much trouble.”

——————–

Macy seemed oddly excited to join them for dinner.  Hobi hoped tonight wasn’t awkward.  The younger boys were always pouncing on any dinner guests that they didn’t already know.  And with both their grandpa and their soon-to-be stepmother there tonight, Hobi wasn’t sure what to expect.

“Hoobbbiii!” Kookie exclaimed the moment Hobi walked in the door.  He came running up to him and hugged his leg.  He looked up at Macy, who had stepped in the door right behind Hobi. “Hi,” he said shyly.

Macy smiled. “Hi there.  What’s your name?”

“Kookie.”

An odd look passed over her face, but she smiled. “Hi, Kookie.  I’m Macy.”

Kookie gave a small wave, and Hobi scooped him up off the ground. “What is Appa making for dinner?”

“He’s makin’ japchae!” Kookie exclaimed.

“All righty.  Why don’t you go find the twins?”

“Ok!” Kookie wriggled out of Hobi’s arms and ran off down the hall.

“Twins?  There’s another set?” Macy asked incredulously.

They both came running down the hall just then.

“Yup.  Jimin and Tae are twins,” Joon explained.

She looked down at them. “They don’t look like twins,” she muttered.

“Tae’s just a bit smaller.  He was two-thirds Jimin’s size when they were born.”

“Joon, who’s this?” Tae asked.  That was when Joon realized Hobi had disappeared.

“This is Macy.  She’s my study partner.”

“Oh, that friend?” Jimin asked, smiling mischievously.

“Don’t get any ideas.  Go see if Appa needs help with dinner.”

Once the two younger boys were gone, Joon led Macy down to the bedroom he shared with Hobi.  He set his backpack by his bed and offered, “You can just leave your stuff on my bed until you leave.”

——————–

Dinner, as expected, turned out to be super awkward.  The younger twins wouldn’t stop snickering, and Kookie refused to climb off of Chaeha’s lap throughout the entirety of dinner.  Hobi, Yoongi, and Jin were all way too engaged in a conversation about cars.  And that left Macy and Joon sitting next to each other silently.  Macy seemed to be enjoying her food, at least.

“Hey, Macy, when are you and Joonie gonna date?” Jimin asked, his mouth full of food.

Jin started choking on his food, and both Joon and Macy turned bright red.

“Why do you ask?” Macy sputtered, reaching for her water.

“Because you’re veerrryyy cute together.”

“Minnie, eat your dinner,” Hobi cut Jimin off before he could say anymore by shoving a bite of noodles in his mouth.

“Jin, where do you think we should have the wedding?” Chaeha asked, quickly changing the subject.

“We could get married by the lake.”

“Ooo!  That’s a good idea!”

——————–

Hobi decided the younger boys needed to go outside after dinner, so he dragged all three of them out back.  Joon was grateful for this.  He and Macy sat on the couch in peace.

“You know, maybe Jimin was right.” Joon commented, breaking the silence.

“What do you mean?” Macy asked, looking up from her textbook.

“Maybe we are cute together.”

She laughed. “Don’t play with me.”

“I’m serious.”

She just stared up at him.

“Do you want to be my girlfriend?”

More silence.

“Really…?” she finally spit out.

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“This is the part where I tell you two you’re not allowed in a room alone together anymore,” Jin commented, announcing his presence.  Joon and Macy both jumped.

“Appa, you really couldn’t have waited?”

Jin laughed. “It’s eight, I think it’s time for Macy to go now.”

“Already?” She squeaked, reaching for her phone. “Oh, no.  I really do need to go.” She stood up and shoved all her books in her bag before heading for the front door. “See you Monday, Joon.”
