In Our Next Lives – Chapter 56: A New Addition

Jisung’s dad wasn’t in the picture.  And his mom had abandoned him.  She’d admitted to it, too.  She’d arrived at the station with a backpack crammed full of Jisung’s belongings.  She shoved the bag into Taehyung’s arms.

“You did this.  He’s your problem now.”

Taehyung and Nia didn’t know what to do.  The kid had been attached to Taehyung for the entire afternoon, refusing to let him go.  The officer had explained the adoption process to them and told them they could think about it.  The truth was, neither of them had the heart to say no.  Their life had flipped upside-down in a matter of minutes.

“What should we do?” Taehyung asked.

“I think we should adopt him, Tae.  We can foster him while they try to find his dad, and if it goes well and his dad doesn’t show up, we should adopt him.”

“You’re sure we can handle that?”

“I can’t be sure about anything, Tae, but I know I want to help him.  I can always quit sooner so I can stay home with him.”

Taehyung nodded, tears filling his eyes.

“Are you ok?” Nia whispered.

Taehyung nodded. “It just…makes me happy that we can help him.  It hurt me so much the day we met him at the park.”

She smiled and rubbed his shoulder. “Guess we’re getting a kid sooner than we thought.”

——————–

“I’m sorry- you did what?” Moon asked, shocked.

“If you had been in my shoes you would’ve done the same.  We couldn’t just send him to an orphanage!”

“But, Nia, your job?”

“I was already quitting at the end of the month.  Two weeks isn’t much difference.”

“You’re so brave taking him on.  I don’t think I could ever do that with a kid I found on the side of a road.” Hyuna sighed. “He’s an ok kid, right?  He’s not vicious?”

Nia shook her head. “I don’t think he was too badly abused.  He isn’t bruised, at least.  I think Tae really took pity on him because he knew what it was like to grow up without a dad.”

“I’d bet.  You two are probably going to spoil him rotten when you adopt him!” Sua laughed.

“Well, if they don’t find his dad, that is.”

“Yeah.  Wow, and I thought your life was smooth sailing from here.”

Nia laughed. “I doubt it will ever be.” She sighed. “Is anyone up to watch him over the wedding weekend?  He’ll most likely still be with us then.”

“I’ll do it!” Moon exclaimed. “Sua’s gonna have her hands full with the triplets, and…” she glanced at Hyuna.

“Don’t give me that look.  I’m not watching anyone’s kids.”

“You don’t like kids?” Sua asked.

“Not really.  Never been a huge fan of them.  I was always the designated babysitter when I was younger, and after that I decided I don’t really like kids.  I might have one of my own, but that’s it.  No more babysitting for me.”

“Oh, I see.  That’s sad.”

Hyuna shrugged. “What were we talking about again?”
