In Our Next Lives – Chapter 83: Take All the Pain Away

Nia was pacing.  She was considering talking to her mom about this.  She wanted to know why she hadn’t told her.  Nia had asked her outright last time they’d spoken.  And her mother had said that it was because she felt that they owed the Jungs her life.  But that couldn’t just be it.  Not after what Nia had just been told.  So why hadn’t her mother told her?

Nia flew off the couch when the doorbell rang.  She opened the door to find Moon, Sua, and the triplets on her doorstep.

“What are you guys doing here?”

“We brought you lunch,” Moon announced, holding up a bag.  She was balancing one of the carriers on her other arm.

“Uh…come in.” Nia waved them inside, still uncertain.

“Thirty days until the wedding!  How do you feel?” Sua asked as she set the two carriers she was holding down on the ground.

“I’m not sure,” Nia admitted. “This year has been wild.”

Sua laughed. “Don’t worry.  Once we get up there, it’ll be exciting.  Besides, you won’t have the wedding night hanging over your head.  Making it official before the ceremony was a great idea.”

“That’s true.  It’s just still a lot of pressure, I guess.”

“Have you written your vows?”

Nia shook her head. “I’m bad with words, honestly.  And besides, I’m sure I could say one sentence and Tae would be crying.”

“Hey, the best part of the whole thing is when your husband starts crying!”

“That was your favorite part of your wedding?”

“Oh, yeah.  Nothing’s better than making a man cry with your words.” She paused. “Well, only if they’re happy tears.  We don’t like sad tears.”

Nia laughed. “What’s for lunch?”

“You’ll have to ask Moon.  She made it.”

“I made salad and…some kind of pasta I don’t remember the name of.  It was something my manager would special request when we were in Italy it because she liked it so much,” Moon explained.

“Is that good?” Nia asked.

Moon shrugged. “I didn’t eat it much.  They would only really let me eat salads.  I preferred to just eat gelato.  They won’t let you do that when you’re a model, though.”

Nia ended up with Jiwoon in her lap as they ate.  As much as Nia had been dreading seeing the babies again in fear of it depressing her, she was enjoying having the little boy squirm around on her lap.  It did make her wonder if she would’ve had a little boy of her own squirming around on her lap in seven months if things had been different, but she tried to not let herself think about that today.

“Here, can you give him his bottle?  I haven’t fed him for a couple hours, so he’s probably hungry,” Sua commented, handing Nia Jiwoon’s bottle.

Nia laughed and put her plate down before holding the bottle up to the little boy’s mouth.  Nearly instantly, he’d started cooing as he sucked on it.  Nia smiled.  But then she frowned.

“Sua, can you take him?”

“Of course,” Sua nodded, scooping the little boy up.  He whined when his bottle was pulled away from him, but Sua set him in the corner of the couch and stuck the bottle back in his mouth.

“How are you doing?” Sua asked.

“It’s just…not going away.  Seeing the babies isn’t as bad as I thought it would be, but it’s still hard.”

Sua nodded. “It’ll be that way for a while.  It’ll probably get worse, honestly.  It might even depend on the day.”

“Will I ever get over it?”

“When you’re holding your baby in your arms, yes.”
