Namjoon sat in his literature lecture class. Normally, he’d be enjoying it. He loved literature. But not today. Yejin wasn’t here today. He had planned on asking her to be his valentine today. He had a poem and everything. But she wasn’t here. Hopefully, she wouldn’t miss poetry class tomorrow. It was his last chance before Valentine’s Day.

“Yejin, quit stressing. If we get the tickets, we get them. If we don’t, oh, well. It’s not worth having a panic attack over.”
“But, Jihye! We HAVE to get the tickets. I won’t survive if we don’t go to the RED concert.”
“You’ll survive. They’re not your everything. Besides, didn’t you say there’s a cute boy in a few of your classes?”
“Yes…” Yejin said dreamily. “Namjoonie. He’s such a sweetheart. And he looks so cute in his glasses and overalls.”
Jihye shook her head. “You’re just lovesick.”
“Hey! You can’t say stuff like that to me! You have Tae! I’ve never even had a guy look my way!”
Jihye rolled her eyes “Whatever. Let’s just get these tickets, so we can go to lunch. I’m starving!”
——————–
Yejin sprinted to class, trying to inhale her sandwich as she ran. Class had started five minutes ago. She burst through the door.
“Ms. Lee, you’re late. Again.”
“Sorry, sir.” Yejin bowed to him before rushing to sit at the back of the lecture hall. It took her a moment to realize she had slipped into the seat next to Namjoon.
“Hey,” Namjoon whispered to her.
“Hi,” Yejin whispered back, a bit surprised.
They didn’t exchange any more words until the end of class. That’s when Namjoon got nervous. The professor had just dismissed class, and everyone was hurrying to leave.
“Hey…um…Yejin?”
Yejin spun around, just to be met with Namjoon’s chest. Right. She had forgotten he was nearly a foot taller than her. She looked up, up, up.
“Yes, Namjoon?”
“I have something for you.”
“For me?”
“Yeah,” he pulled a paper heart and a rose from his bag, handing them both to her.
Yejin’s eyes teared up as she read the poem written on the heart in perfect calligraphy.
“I went to class one day
And met a lovely girl
With a kind heart
That lit up my whole world.
I hoped she’d look my way
And send me a pretty smile,
That she would like me too
And walk with me a mile.”
“In case you haven’t guessed, you’re the girl the poem is about…”
She smiled up at him. He was so sweet.
“I was wondering…if you’d be my valentine?”
“Yes…yes! Of course!” She grinned before flinging herself into his arms, embracing his tall frame. She pulled away almost immediately. “Sorry…I’m a bit awkward.”
Namjoon smiled. “Don’t worry. I’m awkward too. We’re a perfect match.”
Yejin blushed. Thankfully, just then, her phone rang. She pulled it from her pocket. Of course. Just like Jihye to ruin a perfect moment. Yejin hit the reject call button. She’d have to call her back in a minute.
“I’m sorry…I have to go. I’m meeting a friend for coffee in a few minutes. Um…” she dug a piece of paper out of her pocket, quickly scribbling down her number. “Call me? I’d love to get dinner with you tomorrow.”
“Yeah. Sure. I’d like that.”
They stared at each other for a few more moments before her phone rang again, pulling them from their stupor.
“I have to take this. I get the feeling she’ll keep calling me if I don’t answer.”
Namjoon nodded. “Then…see you tomorrow?”
Yejin nodded. “Tomorrow.” She slung her bag over her shoulder, running out the door. “Bye, Namjoon!”
“Bye…Yejin,” Namjoon bid her farewell. But she had already disappeared.
A moment later, she answered her phone, rebuking her friend, “Jihye!”
“Oh, there you are. I was afraid you weren’t coming.”
“Jihye?”
“Yes?”
“You ruined the moment! Twice!”
“The moment…?”
“Yes! Namjoon asked me to be his valentine!”
“Ohhh…so that’s why you didn’t pick up…”
Yejin lost it. “Oh my God, Jihye!”
“What?”
“Nothing. I’m just a little exasperated. He was talking to me!”
“Well, get off the phone with me, and go talk to him.”
“I can’t. I already left him back in the classroom.”
“Well, go back. I’ll talk to you later. I can wait a few minutes.”
Yejin hung up and ran back to the classroom. But she was stopped by a solid chest as her nose made contact with the button over his heart. “Oof!”
Namjoon reached out to steady her. “Yejin.”
“Hi,” she gazed up at him, a silly grin on her face.
“Hi.” Namjoon stared down at her. He couldn’t help grinning. She was so cute. To think he’d despaired of even seeing her today, and now she was in his arms!
“Um. What time did you want to pick me up tomorrow night?” she asked a little breathlessly.
“Six o’clock?”
“Perfect. What’s your phone number?”
He told her, and she texted him her address. He made sure he’d received it.
“Okay. Now I really do have to go,” she informed him sadly. “Bye, Namjoon.”
He said goodbye for the second time today. But he couldn’t wait to say hello to her tomorrow night. He knew just where he was taking her!
