Kindred Spirits – Chapter 7: The Genuine Article

Jungkook stared down into the glass cases surrounding him.  What would Daniela like?  He had said he would order his favorites, and she could try them, but he really wanted to choose things that would please her.  But he didn’t know her.  Not really.

He knew she liked cheesecake.  So did he.  So maybe he should trust his own taste buds.  He also loved chocolate.  He wondered if she’d like the chocolate cheesecake.  He liked it too.  Ooh!  And chocolate cake was another of his favorites.

A few moments later, he placed his order with confidence.  He paid and took his number before wandering over to the table Daniela had snagged while he was ordering.

He set down two cups of water on the table.  “I’m sorry.  I didn’t think to ask you what you wanted to drink.”

“Hot chocolate, of course!” she teased him.

Jungkook’s face fell.  “Oh!  I didn’t even think of that.  It’s summer.  Do they sell it now?” He turned back to look at the menu.

“No!  Jungkook!”  She burst out laughing.  “I was kidding!”  This guy was too sweet.  Just like this delectable shop.  “Water is fine.  Thank you.”  She picked up her cup and took a sip.

Jungkook turned back to the table and glanced down at her.  He smiled.  He was glad to see she seemed happy again.  He’d had the uneasy feeling that he had upset her a few minutes ago.

He sat down across from her.  “Daniela…” He stopped talking.  He wasn’t sure how to say this.

She glanced up at him over the rim of her cup.  Was she hiding behind it?  Maybe she was.  She was a little uncomfortable around him now.  Her feelings for him were stronger than she could have anticipated.  And she wasn’t exactly at peace with them.

“Did I… Did I do something to upset you a little while ago?”

He watched in fascination as a delightful blush spread across her cheeks.  She was suddenly studying the water filling her cup.

“I’m fine,” she mumbled.

“That doesn’t really answer my question.”

Her eyes met his.  “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

She was still evading the question.

“Are you uncomfortable around me?”

She avoided his gaze.  “What makes you think I’m uncomfortable around you?”

“Well, for one thing, you’re avoiding looking me in the eye right now.  I generally do that when I’m not comfortable around someone.”

She sighed and met his gaze.  “You’re fine, Jungkook.  You’re perfect.  I’m the one found lacking.”

“Hey!  Don’t talk about yourself like that!” he rushed to her defense.  And warmed her heart.

She smiled at him.  “You are such a sweetheart!” she murmured.  “You’re the genuine article, you know that?”

“Genuine article?” he asked in his precise English.  His accent was still so adorable.

She nodded.  “It means the real deal.  You are just genuinely you, you know?  Like what you see is what you get?”

He furrowed his brow and scrunched up his nose.  She was loving this expression on his face.  So adorable.  He was just so adorable.  Could she just pack him in her suitcase and take him home in a few weeks?
