The palace had been oddly quiet the past few weeks. No one had tried to sneak in, and there had been no trouble with anyone, really. Jimin hadn’t really disappeared at all. He’d just been trying his best to court Duri. It explained everything. Duri had been gone more often too. But it was just young love.
Ahseong had given Yun the day off today. She had told her that Duri could help her get ready today. Ahseong was now sitting across from Taehyung at lunch.
“Ahseong.”
“Yes?”
“What do you think of Yun?”
“Um…she’s very sweet. I think you chose well when you assigned her as my personal assistant.”
Taehyung offered her a gentle smile. “I’m glad. She’s been working here since she was pretty young, and I trust her, so I thought she might be a good match for you.”
“Ah. You chose well. She and I are very similar.”
They ate in silence for a few minutes.
“Taehyung?”
“Yes?”
“Were you close to Yun when you were young?”
Taehyung paused. “Why do you ask?”
“She reminds me of myself. She is very free-spirited, she loves to read, she isn’t afraid to wear what she wants, and she says a great deal more than she should. Sometimes I wonder if you assigned her to me because you saw our similarities and knew we would get along well.” That wasn’t all of it, but there were some things Ahseong knew to keep to herself.
“She was quite the troublemaker in her youth. There were a lot of times I kept her from getting into trouble when we were young. I got to know her well because of it. I did notice your similarities. You’re right, it is one of the reasons I assigned her to you. Besides that, it is hard to trust people when you’re this high up. She is one of the few people I can trust here. I know she was trouble maker when she was young, but she always had good intentions. I knew I could entrust you to her without worrying.”
“I see. I think you have judged her character correctly. She has become a close friend of mine since I moved in here.”
Taehyung nodded. There was so much she didn’t know.
——————–
Yun sat in the courtyard crying as she ate her cream bun. She was giving herself this one last day to mourn over her loss of Taehyung’s friendship. Then she was going to get over him.
“Yun?”
Yun spun around. Jungkook was standing behind her with a cloth sack in his hands.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m giving myself one last day to cry over Tae. Then I’m getting over him.” She sniffed and turned back to her cream bun. “Cream buns were his favorite snack when we were little. He’d have his cook bake extra, and he’d bring them to me.”
Jungkook removed the cream bun from her hands. He replaced it with a sandwich. “Eat this instead. It’s not good to only eat cream buns, and if you’re going to cry your heart out today you’ll need the energy.”
Yun sniffed and took a bite of the sandwich.
“Why have you loved him for so long? I can see why you loved him when you were young, but he was only your friend for four years before he pushed you away. It’s been nearly four more years since that. Why didn’t you give up on him sooner?”
Yun sighed. “I thought he would change. I thought that maybe if I waited it out long enough, he’d decide he could live without me and he would be my friend again. I now realize that it wasn’t true. He’s left me for good. But I can’t let go…”
“I know it’s hard. I’m sorry I’ve been so harsh about it.”
Jungkook pulled another sandwich from the sack and bit into it.
“You didn’t accidently find me and just happen to have another sandwich, did you?”
Jungkook smiled. “You caught me. A little birdie told me you had the day off and I figured I could find you here.”
Yun returned his smile. Maybe Ahseong was right. Maybe Jungkook was a good choice for her.
