A Little Taste of Suga – Chapter 1: A Tall Americano Encounters a Chocolate Frappuccino

Yoongi sat at his piano, staring out at the pouring rain.  He was so tired, he just wanted to crawl back into his bed.  But he needed to compose.  He had a big show coming up, and he wanted to have some new material.  If only he could stop thinking about her.  Maybe it would be easier to concentrate.

As he studied the little rivulets the raindrops were creating on the windowpanes, he pondered how time was a funny thing.  He’d met her only a week ago.  They’d spoken only briefly.  Yet, he felt as though he’d known her his entire life.

His mind traveled back to that day, last Sunday.  He’d stepped into Starbucks to grab a quick coffee.  He’d been thoroughly exhausted and needed the caffeine desperately.  He’d been up until four a.m. the night before working on his music.  He had a meeting at nine o’clock.  Just enough time to get a black Americano.

He had just picked it up off the counter and was spinning around to head out the door when he ran smack into a pretty girl.  Though, Yoongi didn’t notice her beauty at first.  He was too busy being burned by scalding hot coffee.  His cup had been crushed between his chest and her shoulder as he’d run into her.

“Ow!” she exclaimed as the burning coffee soaked through the shoulder of her shirt.

Yoongi was thinking similar things as his shirt became soaked with the flaming, brown liquid.  So much for looking nice for his meeting.  Or enjoying the benefits of being dry.  Or drinking coffee first thing in the morning.

The young woman looked at the barista and commanded as she pointed at Yoongi, “Whatever you just gave him, please make another and put it on my tab.”  Then she turned towards Yoongi and apologized, “I am so sorry!  If I hadn’t been in such a rush, I wouldn’t have destroyed your coffee and your shirt in one go!”

Now, as he faced her, Yoongi was stopped short by how beautiful she was.  Long, dark hair framed her face in waves before falling halfway down her torso to bounce against her chest.  Her eyes were wide and round and darker than the basalt that results from a volcano losing its temper.  Her nose was a straight ski jump that ended a little short, nestled above two perfect, plump lips.

Those pink lips curving, she smiled at him, sending his heart into fits, before she raised her eyes to the barista.  She moved forward with a slight, “excuse me,” as she brushed past Yoongi’s shoulder.

What was that tingling sensation traveling up his arm?

She paid the barista and turned to hand Yoongi a new cup.

“What did you order?”

“A tall Americano.”

She grimaced.  “You don’t want at least a little taste of sugar in there?”

Yoongi laughed as he glanced at her double chocolate chip Frappuccino.  “You don’t want at least a little taste of coffee in there?”

She winced, shaking her head.  “I don’t like coffee.”

“You don’t like coffee, but you’re at a Starbucks at eight o’clock in the morning?”

“Hey, I’ll have you know that a double chocolate chip Frappuccino contains all four of the essential food groups!”

“Oh, yeah?” Yoongi grinned at her cuteness.

“Yes,” she ticked them off on her fingers as she counted.  “Number one: Chocolate.  This is the most important vegetable of the day.”

“Vegetable?”  Yoongi nearly spit out the swig of coffee he’d just taken.

“Yeah.  You know chocolate is a bean, right?”

Now he did laugh, for real.

She went on.  “Number two: milk.  Number three: sugar.  That one is very important since it takes the place of caffeine.  I get a lot of energy from the sugar in this drink.”

She held it up as though examining it before taking a sip.  She closed her eyes in bliss, and Yoongi had the sudden urge to kiss those pert, pink lips that were trapping a straw between them.  A few moments later, they released the straw and began moving as she put her attention back on Yoongi.

“And finally, number four: whipped cream.  That’s actually the most important ingredient.  That’s why I get a triple order on my Frappuccino.”

Her face spread into a wide smile that shocked Yoongi by lighting up his entire world.  He grinned at her, shaking his head.

“You just described dessert.”

“That’s right!” she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up, not even trying to deny how much she loved sweets.  “It’s the best thing about life!  I always eat dessert first.”

She sucked the straw up between her lips again and joyfully began to draw the light brown liquid into her mouth.  He could tell she was in heaven, thoroughly enjoying the sweet goodness of the dessert drink she’d ordered.

He glanced down at his black coffee and suddenly found it lacking.  Much like the rest of his life, it was dark and straightforward.  And a little bitter.  He suddenly found himself needing to add a little sweetness.

“Oh!”  She glanced at her phone momentarily before meeting his gaze again, her eyes now wide with hurry.  “I’m sorry!  I’ve gotta go!”  She ran out the door, shouting over her shoulder, “So nice to have met you!”

But…I didn’t even get your name.
