Rather Dead Than Without You – Chapter 5: Don’t Leave Me Alone

Taeyeon slept in Jungkook’s bed that night, her head resting on Jungkook’s chest as their arms wrapped around each other.  Well, sort of.  Jungkook had his arms wrapped around Taeyeon.  Taeyeon had her right arm wrapped around Jungkook, but her left arm was resting on her chest in its sling.  She felt safer there in Jungkook’s arms than she would have in her own lonely bed.  He gave her an unfamiliar sense of comfort.

Jungkook lulled Taeyeon to sleep by running his fingers through her hair until she fall asleep.  From this action he discovered how soft her hair was.

Jungkook looked down at the pajamas he had dressed Taeyeon in and smiled.  It made him happy to know he could provide for her now.  And she didn’t have to go around looking like she belonged on the streets.

Jungkook gingerly touched Taeyeon’s wrapped arm.  She would get a proper cast tomorrow.  He felt a wave of sadness wash over him.  He felt so bad for Taeyeon.  He couldn’t imagine growing up without his parents and in a house with a cruel stepmother.  And then end up in a relationship with someone who was abusive.  Jungkook held Taeyeon close.  He wanted to take away her pain, but he wasn’t sure how.

——————–

Taeyeon rolled over onto her stomach, smashing her arm between her chest and the bed.  She winced and rolled back onto her back.  She looked around.  Where was Jungkook?  She sat up abruptly, jostling her arm.  She cried out in pain.  The mix of pain and fear that Jungkook had left caused her burst into tears.  They flowed down her face and fogged her vision almost instantly.

“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” Taeyeon felt a hand rest on her back.

She kept sobbing.  She was so confused and overwhelmed that she had no idea how to respond.

“Hey,” Jungkook breathed.  He did his best to wipe all the tears off of Taeyeon’s face.  There was no point in it.  They just kept coming. “What’s wrong, Yeonie?  Please tell me.  I don’t want you to be distressed.”

“I…was…s-scared that…maybe you l-left…and then…I-I hurt my arm…sitting up too fast…” Taeyeon responded through sobs.

“Oh, I’m sorry.  I went to the kitchen to make some tea.  I didn’t mean to freak you out.” Jungkook hugged Taeyeon close.  She buried her face in his chest.

“I’m sorry…” Jungkook whispered into her hair.

“I-it’s ok…”

Jungkook planted a kiss in her hair. “I promise I’ll try not to freak you out again…I love you so much.  It hurts my heart to see you cry like this.”

Taeyeon sniffed.  Jungkook…loved her?  They’d barely known each other!  She remembered how extremely nice Jungkook had been to her, even for the short while they had known each other.  It sort of made sense that he loved her.  But…they hadn’t known each other for long.  Was it even possible to love someone so quickly?

“Thank you…for loving me…” she started crying again.  She hadn’t heard the phrase ‘I love you’ for fourteen long years.  She barely remembered those words being said to her.  It felt amazing to hear them again.  She finally felt like she had found her home.

Jungkook showered Taeyeon’s hair with kisses.  He felt like they would take some of her pain away.

“Yeon…remember you will always be safe in my arms.”

——————–

It had been a long day.  Taeyeon had finally gotten a proper cast today.  Her arm was much happier with the extra support.  Other than that, the day had been going pretty well.  That is, until they went to dinner.

Jungkook and Taeyeon had walked into Boba & Rice.  Taeyeon had decided that was where she wanted to go for dinner.  It was her one consolation in life before Jungkook.  But today when she walked through the door, she decided she never wanted to come here again.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Jungkook asked, noticing the panicked look on Taeyeon’s face.

“Yunseo…” Taeyeon replied, pointing across the restaurant to a guy sitting in a booth.  She turned to Jungkook. “Can we go home?  Now?”

Jungkook nodded and grabbed Taeyeon’s hand before heading for the door.

“Taeyeon!”

Taeyeon shut her eyes as that terrible voice boomed in her ears.  Tears sprung to her eyes as she suddenly felt a hand grasp her shoulder harshly.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Jungkook snapped.

“Taking what’s mine,” was the simple reply Yunseo gave.

“She’s not yours,” Jungkook held up his hand that was interlocked with Taeyeon’s, showing off their matching gold bands. “She’s mine.”

Yunseo glared at their joined hands. “She wasn’t wearing that ring four days ago.”

“A lot can happen in four days,” Jungkook replied smoothly.

Yunseo tightened his grip on Taeyeon’s shoulder, making her wince.  She held Jungkook’s hand a bit tighter.

“Let go of her shoulder,” Jungkook demanded sharply.

“Make me.”

Jungkook raised his eyebrows. “Ok.  Don’t say you didn’t ask for it.”

Then Jungkook swung his foot up into Yunseo’s crotch.  He scooped Taeyeon up into his arms as Yunseo suddenly ripped his hand away from Taeyeon’s shoulder.

“Have a nice day.”

Jungkook walked out the door with Taeyeon in his arms.  He walked out to their car.  She was now shaking with sobs.  Jungkook unlocked the car and slid into the passenger side seat.  He buried his face in Taeyeon’s hair as she continued sobbing.

“Don’t worry…it’s ok…I’m here…”

——————–

Jungkook looked down at Taeyeon.  They had been here for over an hour now.  And she had fallen asleep a while ago.  Jungkook felt weird sitting in the parking lot for so long, but he didn’t want to wake Taeyeon.

Maybe he could try to maneuver out from under her?  Hmm…how to do it, though?  He scooted to his left until he hit the middle counsel between the seats.  Then he swung his legs off of the passenger side seat.  And slowly scooted Taeyeon off of his lap and into the seat.  There.  Mission accomplished.  He quickly buckled Taeyeon in and slid into his own seat before starting the car.  He sighed in relief.  They could finally go home.
