“Jungkookie…wake up.” Someone sobbed. “It’s all my fault…I shouldn’t have left…” More sobbing.

Jungkook slowly came to his senses.  He could smell disinfectant.  And he could hear a faint beeping sound.  He didn’t even have to open his eyes to know where he was.  He knew the smell all too well.  He was in the hospital.  But…why?  The beeping sped up a bit, prompting Jungkook to open his eyes.

“Oh my goodness, Jungkookie…” Taeyeon was instantly over him, sobbing and showering his face with kisses. “I was so scared!”

“What…happened…?”

“Yunseo…” Taeyeon hesitated, clearly distressed just at the mention of his named. “He almost shot you in the head.  I shoved him…but instead of missing you…he shot you in the stomach…” she frowned. “I’m sorry…if I’d been quicker…” A few tears escaped her eyes. “You wouldn’t be in the hospital…”

“Yeonie, it’s all right.” Jungkook inhaled, a bit winded from just speaking. “A bullet to the stomach is better than a bullet to the head.  You saved my life.”

“Yeah, but…if I hadn’t ran away…”

“It’s all in the past.  You can’t change it, so don’t fret over it.”

There was a beat of silence, but then Jungkook realized something. “Shouldn’t you page the nurse?”

——————–

It had been a week since the incident.  Taeyeon had gotten over the initial shock of it and was distancing herself again.  Sure, she’d still visit Jungkook, but he could tell something was wrong.

“Yeonie?”

“Hmm?”

“Why are you ignoring me?”

“I’m not.  I’ve been here every day since you were hospitalized.”

“Yes, but you’ve barely talked to me the past few days.”

There was a beat of silence.  Then she spoke. “Why did you have my phone last week?  Taking it was an invasion of my privacy, and on top of that it made me panic.”

Jungkook sighed.  So that was what this was about. “I know.  And I’m sorry.  The night you were sick, Yunseo sent you some threatening texts.  I knew it would freak you out, so I was trying to resolve it without you knowing.  I didn’t think about it upsetting you.  I’m really sorry.”

Jungkook looked up at Taeyeon, expecting her to have an enraged look on her face.  But instead, she was crying.

“Oh…oh my goodness…” Taeyeon buried her face in her hand. “I’m so stupid…” she mumbled, a sob escaping her throat.

“Yeon…don’t cry, please.  You’re not stupid.  You didn’t feel safe in my house after I took your phone.  It’s understandable that you ran away.”

“But, Jungkook…he almost…” her voice caught on another sob. “He almost killed you…all because I didn’t trust you…” she finished in a small voice.

“Yeonie.  It was my choice to go after him.  And…who knows?  If I hadn’t been there to distract him, he might’ve killed you.  And don’t tell me I should’ve have come for you.  I’m glad I did.  I can’t lose you, Taeyeon.” Jungkook inhaled, mirroring tears to Taeyeon’s flowing down his cheeks. “I’m so in love with you, Yeonie.  I can’t- I can’t lose you.  It’d break me.”

“Jungkookie…” her voice broke into a sob.  She crawled up onto to Jungkook’s bed and wrapped her free arm around his waist.  She buried her face in his chest, continuing to sob.

“I’m sorry…for everything…I don’t deserve you…”
