The Sole of Kindness – Chapter 4: Camaraderie

She returned with a cup of coffee.  Unsolicited.  But she already knew what he liked.

And he definitely liked her.

“Will you go out with me?” he murmured as he picked up the coffee and bent to inhale its tantalizing scent.

She stood gaping at him.

“Nari.  Table eight is up!”

“Uhh.”

“You better go do your job.  My question will wait,” Yoongi mumbled to his coffee.

“I don’t even know your name,” came her reply ten minutes later.

“That’s easy enough.”  He glanced into her eyes.  “Yoongi.”

“Yoongi,” she breathed.  Then she smiled at him.  And this time her smile traveled all the way from her lips to her heart.  “One date.”

He pouted.  “Only one?”

“Depends.”

He eyed her.  “On what?”

Her lips quirked.  “How you do.”

Suddenly, he grinned at her.  “There will definitely be a second date then.”

“Oh-ho!  You’re awfully confident, aren’t you?” she teased him.

He nodded his head.  “You already like me, or else you wouldn’t have let me walk you home.  And you accepted the shoes.  And you gave me coffee and bibimbap.  I think you’re half in love with me already.”  Now he was the one teasing her.

“You must believe I like younger men.”

“Clearly, you do.”  He frowned.  “But…just exactly how old are you?”

“Nineteen.”

He started laughing.

Perplexed, she stared at him.  “What’s so funny?”

“When is your birthday?”

“March tenth.”

Now he was practically rolling on the floor.

And she was becoming perturbed.

He glanced up at her.  “Do you like older men too?”

Her brow furrowed.  “What?”

“I’m a day older than you.”

“But you’re still in high school.”

“Yep, I am.”

“You’re really older than me?”

He shrugged.  “Just by a day.”

She smiled now.  She liked the idea of him being older.  “So…where are you taking me?”

He considered her.  “Do you like basketball?”

Her eyes lit up.  “I do, actually!”

“Some of my friends are playing tomorrow night.  Is there any way you could get the night off from work?”

“I already have it off.  I’m done at six.  Is that early enough?”

“Could I pick you up here?”

She nodded.

“Then it is early enough.  I’m assuming I can treat you to dinner after the game?”

“Depends,” she echoed her earlier response.

“On what?”

“Does it include dessert?”

“You have a sweet tooth, eh?” he quirked one dark eyebrow at her.

“Depends,” she responded for the third time.

“On what?” he chuckled.

“Does it come with black coffee?”

“You like black coffee, huh?”

“Can’t stand the stuff.”

Puzzled, he frowned.  “Then why did you ask?”

“Because I don’t want you to watch me eating dessert unless you can enjoy something too.”

“How did you know I don’t care for dessert?”

“You like your coffee black.” She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the whole world.

“And how exactly did you know I like black coffee?”

She shrugged her shoulders.  “You just seemed like a black coffee lover.  And I didn’t see you add any sugar or cream to it when I brought you a cup last night.  But you drank it all straight down.”

He nodded.  “I think we’re going to get along very well.”

“I think…we already are,” she lifted the corners of her lips in a sweet smile.
