Sarah awoke on her birthday to a deep, soulful voice singing in her ear. She smiled. Tae could make even the happy birthday song sound amazing. She waited until he was done singing to speak.
“Good morning, Tae-Tae.”
“Good morning. Happy birthday, angel.” Tae whispered, kissing her ear as he cuddled into her.
“Do you remember what else today is?”
“Mmm, of course. The anniversary of the day we met.”
It had been four years ago, but she remembered it like it was yesterday.
She’d decided to go to the dog café for her birthday. She’d gone alone because everyone she’d asked was too busy. She’d also considered adopting a dog while she was there. She loved dogs. They were so cute and fluffy.
She’d been playing with the dogs for about half an hour when she’d found a puppy she thought she might want to adopt. The small dog was fluffy and light brown with curly fur. But when she went to pick the puppy up, someone else scooped it up instead. She was about to protest, but when she looked up, the sight she was met with shut her mouth. The cutest guy she’d ever seen was cooing at the small pup and petting her fur.
“You’re so small…” the guy whispered, burying his face in her fur. “I think you’d make a nice addition to my dull house. Make it a little happier, hmm?”
That made Sarah stand up. “You’re gonna adopt her?” she asked with wide eyes, close to tears.
The guy looked up at her in surprise. “I think so, why?”
“Well…I was going to.” She mumbled, not knowing what else to say. She had no idea how to convince this guy to let her have the puppy.
“Oh…well…we could get a shared adoption,” he joked.
She looked up at him with bright eyes. “We could?”
He looked at her with a surprised look on his face. “Does it mean that much to you?”
“Well…I…it’s my birthday, so I was going to adopt a puppy as a birthday present for myself.”
“Ah. I see.” He chuckled. Then he held the puppy out to her. “You can have her. I’ll choose another one.”
“Really?”
He nodded. She smiled and accepted the dog happily.
An hour later, she was walking out of the café having officially adopted Mocha. That was what she had decided to name the tiny pup. She walked a few steps and stopped. The guy from the café was now sitting outside on a bench drinking a smoothie. And he was without a dog. Had he not found another dog to adopt? She decided to ask him.
“Were there no other dogs you liked?”
He looked up at her. “Oh…no. It’s ok.” He smiled.
But she frowned. “Why don’t we exchange phone numbers? That way you can see Mocha.”
“Mocha? That’s a cute name.”
She smiled. “You like it? I had some trouble coming up with it.”
He nodded. “I love it.”
There was a heavy pause as they stared at each other.
“Do you want to go for a walk with us?”
——————–
“Sarah, wake up.”
Sarah awoke to the unpleasant feeling of someone poking her in the ribs.
“Hmm…what is it, Tae?”
“You fell asleep again. C’mon, get up. We’re going to breakfast, remember?”
She sighed. “Ok…five more minutes.”
But Tae wouldn’t take that for an answer. He pulled back the covers and scooped her out of bed. “Nope. You need to shower before we leave, sleepyhead.” He kissed her forehead.
“Ugh…fine…”
