In Our Next Lives – Chapter 15: A Glimmer of Hope

Word count: 0.6 K

Hobi and Nia took their time telling their parents they were breaking off the engagement.  Nia started to wonder if Hobi had actually planned on marrying her.  They’d dated for almost five years before he’d proposed.  And then they’d spent almost two years engaged, but they’d never even begun to plan a wedding.

Now they were buying their time as they packed up Nia’s things.  They didn’t need their parents finding out she was moving in with Taehyung yet, either.  That would just cause a disaster.

It took them less than a week to move her in with Taehyung.  But after that, everything went downhill.  Nia and Taehyung had just started to get comfortable with each other, and now that they lived together, there was once again an uneasiness in the air.

After about two weeks of living together, Nia was beginning to wonder if this had been a good idea.  She decided to meet up with Hyuna one night to talk about it.  She really had no one else to talk about it with.

“Girl!  I can’t believe you really moved in with him!  I never thought you’d have the guts!”

Nia sucked in a breath of air. “Well…there’s really more to it than you think.”

Hyuna rested her chin in her hands. “Well, I have all day.”

Half an hour later, Hyuna was staring at Nia with wide eyes. “He was your boyfriend?”

Nia nodded. “I think…it was more than that.”

“What do you mean?”

“It sounded like we were serious.”

“Ooo!  You mean he was going to propose?”

Nia’s eyes widened. “What?  No…” she looked down at the table. “I…maybe?”

——————–

Nia was even more on edge around Taehyung after Hyuna said that.  She was starting to realize she might just have a crush on him.  Which wasn’t all that bad.  She wasn’t engaged to Hobi anymore.  But still, liking someone was scary.

Another thing was that she wasn’t quite sure how Taehyung felt.  Sure, he’d offered to let her move in with him.  And then actually moved her in.  But what did that prove?  Maybe he was just nice.  It had been eight years.  Surely his feelings had changed….

She suddenly recalled something from her first real conversation with Taehyung.  At least, the first one she could remember.

“You don’t have a girlfriend?”

“I had a girlfriend.  She died eight years ago.  I never got over her.”

That thought stopped her short.  Was he still in love with her?  He’d been hinting at it all along, hadn’t he?

——————–

Taehyung slipped open his dresser and dug through it.  Once he reached the bottom of the mountain of clothes, he pulled out a small box.  He bit his lip as tears started to prick his eyes.  He hadn’t opened this box for eight years.  He’d bought it right before Nia had been diagnosed.  Then he’d tossed it to the side and never looked back because of the pain it brought him.  But now, there was hope again.  Should he take a chance?

He tugged on the top of the box, and it popped open.  He stared down at it for a few seconds.  This was the thing he’d spent all his money on.  He had planned on starting college that year, but this had been more important.  Even after Nia’s death, he couldn’t bring himself to get rid of it.  And now he was so glad he hadn’t.
