Just then a crash of thunder resounded, waking Yoongi from his reverie. Staring out the windowpane once again, he saw a white-hot flash of lightning snake to the ground a few feet in front of him.
Whoa. That was close. A little too close for comfort. He drew back away from the window. That lightning strike reminded him of the feeling that had arced through him when she’d brushed past him to pay for his second coffee. He wanted to feel it again.
He had returned to Starbucks at the same time every day for almost a week in an effort to find her. But alas, she had not been there! He shook his head ruefully. He had not been able to find her again, and now he was unable to get any work done because all he could do was think about the mysterious beauty with the kissable lips.
He rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he glanced at the time on his cellphone. 7:32. Then he was struck with a sudden inspiration. Could it be? Was it possible that she visited Starbucks every Sunday at the same time? What if she did? If he hurried, maybe he would find her again. Besides, he could really use a hot cup of caffeine this morning.
Yoongi debated the merits of jumping into the shower, but he decided to save time by simply throwing on some clean clothes. Then he grabbed an umbrella as he prepared to battle the elements on his way out the door. Briefly, he glanced in the mirror that hung on the wall next to his front door. His raven locks were slightly askew. He ran his fingers through his hair in an attempt to straighten it out.
There. That was better. He wanted to look his best. Just in case he found her. He smiled at his reflection, his beautiful, mahogany eyes lighting up at the possibly of seeing her again. Then he ran out the door, swinging the umbrella up over his head.
Starbucks was simply a two-block walk from his apartment. Sheltering under the umbrella, he made his way briskly down the wet sidewalk as he watched the pouring rain hit the already soaked pavement. Small streams of water were beginning to form around his feet to deposit themselves out onto the road next to him. He watched cabs racing by and people ducking into businesses in an effort to evade the rain.
Finally, he himself was slipping into Starbucks. He shook his umbrella out, right before he stepped through the doorway. He glanced around the tiny cafe, his eyes searching for one particular, dark head. He sighed in disappointment. He didn’t see her. He got into line anyway, already prepared to order. A tall Americano, please.
Then he remembered that he had desired a little sweetness in his cup after talking to her. He had a choice to make. He could allow his having met her to change his life. Or he could go back to life before her. Somehow, having encountered her even briefly had had a profound impact on his soul. So he made a new decision. As he stepped up to order, he found himself saying, “A tall Americano. And put a little sugar in it.”
As he reached into his pocket to withdraw his wallet, a soft voice sounded in his ear, “So, you decided maybe your coffee would be better with some sweetener in it, after all, huh? Craving a little dessert this morning?”
He spun around, a smile lighting up his whole face. Yes, he was definitely desiring dessert this morning, and here she was!
The gorgeous girl inwardly gasped as the beautiful young man in front of her smiled. She would never have guessed the impact upon his countenance that a small smile could make. He was simply captivating! His unusual, sienna eyes were seeking out her own, laughter brimming in his.
“Indeed,” he responded.
She returned his smile, stepping forward to give the clerk her order. But Yoongi prevented her. “Please. Allow me. Add a double chocolate chip Frappuccino to my order. With triple the whipped cream.” He raised an eyebrow at the lovely lady as though to confirm her order.
She nodded. “You remembered!” Her face lit up with joy. She was truly touched that this sweet guy recalled her coffee order from a week ago. She pulled some cash out of her pocket.
Yoongi looked down at her questioningly. “You’re not going to let me treat you to coffee?”
She smiled. “That’s very kind of you. I will. I just…I’m really hungry. The Frappuccino is to wash down the cinnamon roll.” She pointed towards the glass case facing them.
Yoongi spoke before she could. “And a cinnamon roll too,” he told the clerk ringing up his order. Inwardly, he was shaking his head. This girl sure liked her sweets!
“You don’t have to buy my breakfast!” the cute girl exclaimed. “I can pay for it.”
Yoongi just smiled his sweet smile as he handed the clerk his credit card.
He was so happy! He’d found this beautiful girl once more. He was delighted to buy her breakfast.
She gave up and smiled at him again. “Thank you. But…aren’t you hungry? You’re not going to eat breakfast?”
He shook his head. “No. I don’t eat breakfast. I eat between noon and six in the evening.”
“What?! Why? You mean, only between noon and six?”
He nodded as the clerk handed his credit card back to him. He pocketed it and then turned to watch the sweet girl who loved dessert. She was all the sweetness he needed in his life. He was thinking the sugar in his coffee was probably overkill now that he was enjoying her presence. She was what he had really been craving.
“It’s called intermittent fasting. It helps me control my weight. It’s important for my job.”
“What’s your job?”
Yoongi just stared at her. Ignoring her question, he asked her, “Do you live here in Seoul?”
She nodded, wondering what on earth that had to do with her question.
She didn’t know who he was. Of course, he should have realized that when she hadn’t freaked out upon meeting him last week. He wasn’t overly eager to enlighten her.
“Sir, your coffee,” the clerk interrupted their conversation.
Yoongi sighed with relief. He reached for the two cups, handing his girl the sweeter one. Her coffee cup appeared to have grown a mountain out of the top of it. A snow-capped mountain of whipped cream. He watched in some amusement as she put her face into it as she opened her mouth over the tip of the mountain and used her lips to scoop up a mouthful of whipped cream. Pressing her lips together, she swallowed the sweet treat as she smiled up at him.
He suppressed a laugh as he looked down at her. She had a dollop of whipped cream on the tip of her nose. She looked so cute! He smiled at her. He had to resist the urge to lean over and kiss away that whipped cream. Instead, he reached up and brushed his thumb across the tip, carrying the white cream away.
She froze. He’d just touched her. She could still feel the pad of his thumb burning into her flesh where he’d brushed against her skin ever so briefly. She blinked up at him.
“Excuse me. I need to help the next person in line.” The brusque voice of the clerk ruined the mood and broke through their reverie.
Yoongi picked up the plate with her cinnamon roll on it and gestured towards a table. “Care to sit down with me?”
His mahogany eyes were boring a hole through her own. Would she survive being lanced by the lasers those eyes were emitting? Then he smiled again, and those lasers turned into the kindest rays of a benevolent sun. Clearly, he had appeared to brighten her overcast day. The rain clouds were disappearing already.
She nodded and followed him to the table. He set the cinnamon roll and his coffee down on the tabletop. Then he did something as wonderful as it was unexpected. He pulled her chair out for her. She stood staring at him for a moment as tears filled her eyes. How was it that such a small gesture of his could make her feel so cherished? No one had ever pulled a chair out for her before. She sat down gingerly and allowed him to push her towards the table. Then he seated himself in the chair across the table from hers.
She reached for her plate and pulled it towards her, suddenly sheepish. His kind gesture had left her undone. She wasn’t sure what to say now. She stared down at her cinnamon roll.
Yoongi studied the little beauty across from him. Why was she crying? He was sure she was. He could see tears in her eyes. Had he done something to offend her?
His quiet voice floated across the table to her. “Did I do something to upset you?”
Her head flew up. “No!” She took a deep breath in an attempt to still her racing heart. “You didn’t! I just…” her voice trailed off.
