Yoongi and Mitsuko had made their way through the pouring rain to her appointment. Although covered by his umbrella, they were both a little damp by the time they arrived at their destination. As they crossed the last street, Mitsuko accidentally stepped into a large puddle, soaking her feet.
“Ugh!!!” she exclaimed, her shoes suddenly squishing beneath her toes.
“What’s wrong?” Yoongi’s breath passed over her face as he turned to look at her. His arm was still firmly around her waist hugging her to him.
“I just soaked my shoes.”
“What size do you wear?”
“What?”
“What’s your shoe size?”
“245.”
“Perfect.”
“What?”
They had just arrived at the door to the building they had been approaching. Yoongi looked up at it. “Is this where your meeting is?”
She glanced up at the multitude of windows covering the skyscraper. She nodded. “Yes, it is.”
“What time will you be done?”
“What?”
Yoongi grinned. They both seemed to be very fond of that word today. “I want to walk you home. Or wherever you need to go next. What time will your appointment be over?”
She smiled. This man really was so very sweet. “Maybe in about an hour.”
“Ok. I’ll meet you in the foyer. All right?”
She beamed at him. “Yoongi, you really don’t have—”
Yoongi held up his hand and made a strange sound like “Zippppp!” to silence her protest before smiling at her. “I’ll see you soon!” he ventured softly before spinning around and walking back down the street, his umbrella shielding him from a fresh downpour.
An hour later Mitsuko glanced yet again at her phone. She was running late. Would Yoongi still be waiting for her when she finally made it downstairs?
Ten more minutes went by before she freed herself from the confines of the hard office chair and made a beeline for the elevator. Impatiently, she tapped her foot as the elevator made its way down. Her toes were still swishing around in her damp shoe. It had been driving her bananas for over an hour. She hated getting her shoes wet. She could tell her toes had turned to prunes already. She wasn’t looking forward to the walk home in the rain.
She breathed a sigh of relief as the elevator doors opened to reveal Yoongi standing in the foyer waiting for her, a shopping bag hanging from his left hand. His other hand still clutched the umbrella. She hurried towards him, her feet still sloshing around in her shoes. As she rushed forward, one of her shoes suddenly went flying off her foot and shot across the room towards Yoongi. It came to land unceremoniously on the floor directly in front of his right foot. He looked down at it with surprise clearly written all over his face, but he was laughing when he glanced back up at her.
“Take the other one off too!” he commanded, a chuckle still evident in his voice.
“What?” she asked her favorite question again.
He held up the bag. “I got you something.”
“What?” There it was again. What was wrong with her? Couldn’t she say anything else? “You got me a present?”
Yoongi’s lips lifted in a sweet smile. “Come find out.”
He held the bag out towards her. She accepted it and bent to peek inside. She withdrew a rectangular box. She lifted the lid and squealed with delight as she discovered a pair of new shoes.
“Yoongi! THANK YOU! My feet have been absolutely miserable for the last hour!”
She did take off her other shoe. Then she looked around for some way to dry her feet off before slipping them into the new shoes.
“Hang on a sec.” She headed for the bathroom and sighed with relief when she discovered paper towels in the dispenser. She wiped her feet off, drying them completely before sliding her feet into the shoes that Yoongi had so thoughtfully bought for her.
A tear formed in her eye. She glanced at herself in the mirror. She had never felt this treasured by a guy in her whole life. And she’d known him for less than two hours. Who was he? Her knight in shining armor, for sure!
She rushed back out to the foyer, not wanting to keep him waiting any longer than necessary.
“I knew they were your shoes the instant I saw them.”
“What do you mean?”
He looked down at the bag in her hand. “Did you notice the brand?”
“What?” She did it again! He was going to think she was a birdbrain! “The brand?” she questioned as she withdrew the box again. GUMDROPS. She laughed.
“Clearly, someone with a sweet tooth named this brand. It seemed to shout, ‘Mitsuko!’ as I was walking by.”
She grinned at him. “You can’t hide your true motive. You went to the store just to find me a pair of shoes, didn’t you? Yoongi, why are you so nice to me?”
Omg I love this book, they couldn’t be any cuter! I love it!!!
