A Perfect Fit: A Valentine’s Day Story – Yoongi’s Edition

Yoongi still remembered the first time he’d seen her.  He’d been sitting on a park bench, listening to music, working on his fingering, when she walked by.  It had been – what else? – a spring day.  A perfect spring day.  The sky had been a bright blue – what was that color?  Ah, yes!  Cerulean.  Heaven’s vault had been cerulean that day, and puffy, white clouds had completed its perfection.  There had been a sweet breeze carrying the scent of cherry blossoms to his awaiting sinuses. He’d inhaled deeply as he glanced up.

The gorgeous girl with the burgundy hair had completed the picture.  Her cute, pixie hairdo framing her face with color, she’d walked past him.  But his eyes had stopped her.  Her great, dark eyes had glanced back his way momentarily, and her burgundy lips had stretched into a wide smile.  He’d been lost from that moment.  Even then, he’d known he wasn’t getting his heart back.

Today was their first Valentine’s Day together.  He’d been plotting it for months.  He was seated now in front of his piano as he prepared to play the song for her.  The one he had written because he loved her so much.  He supposed she was his muse.  Though, he didn’t really think of her that way.  It was just that when he pondered how wonderful she was, when he thought of her beauty, music bubbled up from deep within him, and words came to him with ease.  He’d simply had to write it all down.  Now he was going to let it overflow to her.

She was seated next to him on the piano bench. He could feel her breathing.  He could also sense her anticipation.  She knew he’d written this song for her.  She could barely contain her excitement.  It was flowing out of her tapping foot.  He picked his right foot up and set it gently down on top of her left foot, the one that was releasing a steady tattoo into the floor.  As his foot touched hers, she glanced up at him.

“Calm your foot’s racing heart.  It’s all right.  I’m going to start playing it now,” he murmured in a low voice that always gave her shivers.

Yoongi delighted her soul.  She stilled herself.  Then she turned her head to gaze at his beautiful face.  His features were schooled in a mild expression.  He glanced at her and nearly lost his composure.  Quickly, he looked down at the keys.  His fingers were ready.  He took a deep breath.  Why was he so nervous?  It wasn’t like he hadn’t played the piano before.  It was just that…he really wanted her to like his song.

As though she could read his thoughts, she leaned towards him and whispered in his ear, “I’m going to love it, Yoongi, because it’s part of you.  And I love you.”  Her breath was teasing his skin, but it was her words that penetrated his heart.

He glanced at her, his heart turning over.  He bent his head and kissed her soft lips, lingering there for a moment before his fingers began to play.

“You are my spring day.

You are my only way.

You are my shining light.

Please keep on shining bright.

You are my sweet breeze.

The fragrance in my trees.

Promise of a new season.

You are my only reason.

You are my bright blue sky.

The reason that I can fly.

You are my puffy clouds.

The reason I sing aloud.”

Then he played a sweet interlude while she rested her head on his shoulder.  She’d closed her eyes to soak in his gruff voice.  The beautiful strains of his melody wrapped around her, delighting her soul.  And her ears.

“Summer sun, winter moon,

Gentle breeze, tender noon.

You are my light

Even in the darkest night.

You feed me hope, you do,

In all that we walk through.

I love you.  Ooh-hoo.

I love you.  Ooh-hoo. Ooh-hoo.”

She could feel tears leaking out between her eyelashes.  She reached up to brush them away as Yoongi played another interlude before beginning the second chorus, his lovely voice invading her heart once more.

“You are my brand new day.

You wash my fears away.

I pray you are here to stay.

Walk with me all the way.

No longer I’m alone.

No longer on my own.

Holding your hand in mine,

Wanna be with you all the time.

Your smile’s my bright sun.

You are my only one.

You make me laugh so loud.

Your sweet smile leaves me wowed.”

She drank in the instrumental flow of the next part of his song before he sang the chorus again.  No one had ever written a song for her before.  She was undone.  If she hadn’t already loved Yoongi with all of her heart, he would have stolen her breath with this melody alone.  The words simply cemented his place in her heart.  For all of time.

“Summer sun, winter moon,

Gentle breeze, tender noon.

You are my light

Even in the darkest night.

You feed me hope, you do,

In all that we walk through.

I love you.  Ooh-hoo.

I love you.  Ooh-hoo. Ooh-hoo.”

Yoongi played the closing bars of the song he had written for love of the girl leaning against him. His heart was racing away with him right now.  For he had one more thing to give her today.  As his fingers stilled on the keys, his head turned towards her.  She lifted her head off his shoulder and gazed into his eyes.  She didn’t have to speak.  He could tell that his song had had the intended effect.

He stood up and walked around the left side, his side, of the piano bench.  He circled it and came to stand next to her.  She shifted so that she was now facing him.  Then, he got down on his knees in front of her.  He pulled his hand from his pocket, his thumb lifting the lid of a small, burgundy velvet box.  He held it out in front of her.

“Eunseo, I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me?”

She gasped as she sat looking first into his gentle eyes and then into the jewelry box.  A stunning ruby glistened before her.  He reached out and pulled the silver ring from its resting place.  The half-carat ruby gleamed like a pomegranate jewel.

“The day I met you, your hair matched your lips.  Both were a deep burgundy.  I’ve never forgotten.  When I saw this ring, it just screamed your name.  And it echoed the passion I feel for you in my heart.”

She was overjoyed that he felt passion for her in his heart.  Her own heart had just melted into the floor.

“Yes, Yoongi!  I will marry you.  I love you so!”

He slid the ring onto her finger.  It was a perfect fit.  Just like her.
