The bell rung above Jimin as he walked into the coffee shop. It was Christmas. And he was spending it alone. Hobi had gone home to see his family, and Tae was spending it with his girlfriend. But Jimin had no one. So here he was. In a nearly abandoned coffee shop. On Christmas.
The only person in the coffee shop was the girl standing behind the counter reading a book while she ate a pastry. She looked up at him when he entered. She looked slightly annoyed to be putting down her book, but she walked up to the counter after dusting off her hands.
“What would you like?”
“What was the pastry you were eating?”
“Um…a blueberry scone.”
“I’ll have one of those, then.”
Jimin really had no idea what he wanted. He didn’t even know why he’d come here. He’d been sitting alone, bored, in his dorm. He’d thrown on his coat and shoes and walked out the door before he could think. Somehow, he’d found himself here.
“That will be $2.49, sir.”
He handed the girl his debit card and she scanned it before returning it to him and going to get his scone. A few moments later, he found himself sitting at a table wondering why he hadn’t ordered anything to drink. He didn’t want to bother the girl again, though. She seemed immersed in her book. So Jimin ate his scone in silence.
“Do you have no one to be with tonight?”
Jimin looked up. The girl had set down her book and was leaning on the counter looking at him.
“Um…no. Both of my friends had plans.”
“Your parents?”
“They don’t do much of anything for Christmas, so I don’t go home.”
“I see.”
“What about you?”
The girl stood there for a moment before answering. “I was supposed to be spending it with my boyfriend, but he dumped me last week.”
“Oh…I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s all right. He wasn’t a very good boyfriend anyway. Mostly just spent money on me and said he didn’t have time to get together.”
Jimin wondered why she’d even been with him in the first place, but he didn’t ask.
“You go to Hanyang University?” the girl asked, motioning to his jacket.
“Yeah.”
“That’s where I got too!”
“Really? What’s your major?”
“Chemistry. You?”
“Me too!”
Her eyes widened in surprise. “Year two?”
“Yeah? How have we never seen each other?”
“I don’t know! You wanna go to the lake in a few? My shift ends in ten minutes.”
Jimin smiled. He would like that. Very much. Maybe he wouldn’t spend Christmas alone after all.
