Chasing Your Face – Chapter 3: Odd Happenings

It was Monday morning again.  Which meant Nina had to wake Mina up again.  Their alarm clock never woke her.

“Miiiiinaaaaaa wake upppppp!” Nina sighed.  She didn’t have the energy for this.  Jin was so lucky having his first class at 10.

“Ninaaaa…stop hitting me with the pillow, I’m awake.”

“You better be up in ten minutes.  I don’t want to have to come back here again.”

Mina groaned and buried her face in her pillow. “Fine.”

Thirty minutes later the girls piled into Tae’s car.

“So, Jungkook’s birthday is coming up,” Tae remarked the moment both of the girls were in the car.  Jungkook was Tae’s younger brother.  Usually he’d ride with them, but today he was riding with a friend. “What should we do for his birthday this year?”

“Jungkook doesn’t have any requests?” Mina asked.

Tae shook his head. “He said he didn’t care.  I’m thinking we should throw him a surprise party.”

“Jungkook?  Surprise party?” Nina laughed. “There’s no way we’ll be able to pull that off.”

“Ah, but I have a plan.” Tae announced.

“One that’s going to work?” Mina asked teasingly.

“Hey!  I’ve known Jungkook his whole life!  If anyone knows how to surprise him, it’s me!”

“Right, right…sure.” Mina muttered.

Nina grinned.  Sometimes Mina and Tae acted more like siblings than boyfriend and girlfriend.  But they’d been together for a while.  They weren’t still in the ‘honeymoon’ stage of their relationship.  As Nina watched them every day, she realized she was a little jealous.  She was very happy for both of them that they’d found each other so early in life, but…she wished someone would look at her the way Tae looked at her sister.

Nina walked into math class.  It was only the second day but she already hated not having the same class as Mina and Tae.  She knew almost no one in the class.  Except Hobi.  And she’d never really talked to him.  He’d been in their classes forever.  And he was the class clown.

Today he was sitting on his desk with his legs crossed.  He was eating…gummy worms?  Odd.  Nina walked to her seat.  Which was right next to his.

“Hi, hi, Nina!  Or are you Mina…?”

Nina laughed. “I’m Nina, you were right the first time.  Remember, I have brown eyes, Mina has green eyes?”

“Ah, yes.  The reason you aren’t identical twins.” Hobi laughed.

Nina rolled her eyes. “We ARE identical twins.  Being identical has nothing to do with our coloring.  Or our brains, apparently.” She mumbled the last part.

“Hey!  Don’t put yourself down!  Mina isn’t nearly as athletic as you, is she?  You two are different people.  You have different strengths!”

Nina smiled at him.  He might have been the class clown, but he was very good at encouraging people.

“Thanks, Hobi.”

Nina had another run-in with Jimin that afternoon.  This time it was her fault his papers were everywhere.

“I really need to invest in a binder…” Jimin sighed as they picked up the papers.

“That might be a good idea,” Nina commented.  She looked up.  And came nose-to-nose with Jimin.  Her eyes widened.

“Um…” Jimin started. “I-I should get going…” He collected his papers from Nina. “Thanks…for helping me pick these up…”

He stood quickly, bowing his head to her before running off.  Nina looked after him.  Why had he reacted like that?

“Nina!  There you are!  What are you doing on the ground?” Mina asked as she ran up to her. “Were you shoved over?”

Nina looked up. “Oh?  No, I’m fine.  I was helping someone pick up their papers and got distracted after they left…”

She stood up. “Let’s go.  Jin’s probably waiting for us.”

Mina glanced up at Tae.  He looked just as confused as she felt.
