Chapter 10: Wanted: A Grandbaby – May 5, 2024
Naru came through the door looking defeated.
“What’s wrong?” Minha rushed forward in concern.
“I found out something horrible today, and I just don’t know how to break the news to my eomma.”
“What?” Her brow furrowed as her heart began to race.
“My older sister died.”
“What?”
“You know how my eomma had a daughter before she married? One she gave away?”
She nodded. He had shared this news with her a while back along with his search for his missing sister.
“She died?”
“Yes. A decade ago.”
She’d already been gone for seven years when his eomma had told him about her. He felt absolutely crushed. He had encouraged his mother to search for her. And now he’d received this ghastly news. He had no idea how badly this was going to devastate his eomma.
“How did she die?”
“I don’t know. They wouldn’t tell me. I only got that information out of them because the receptionist at the adoption agency took pity on me when I told her how heartbroken my mother was.”
Minha frowned. “I’m so sorry, Naru.” She slid her arms around him. “Would you like me to go with you when you tell her?”
“I’m not going to tell her.”
“You’re not?”
“Not yet. Not until I can ascertain whether she left behind any children.”
“Surely not. She wouldn’t have been very old back then, would she?”
“She was twenty-three.”
“Ugh. So young!”
He nodded. “I’m going to keep digging. Surely, I can find something.”
“Do you, at least, have a name?”
“No. Not yet.”
