Why was Nari weeping like he’d just broken her heart?
His own heart was tumbling around in his chest. Her tears were distressing him. His arms were already embracing her. How could he comfort her any more than he already was?
Uncertain, he bent his head and began to kiss her lips again. Still, she sobbed. Only now, into his mouth. So he pulled back and brushed his lips against her cheek. Over and over again.
“My precious girl, what is breaking your heart? Is it something I said?”
He was becoming alarmed. He’d broken her heart by telling her he loved her? Was this what normally happened when a man spoke such uncommon words?
“It was everything you said. But mostly, it was knowing you meant every word.” She gasped for air. “Yoongi, I love you – with all my heart. No one has ever said those words to me. Not anyone who meant them anyway. They have all – every single one of them – walked away from me.”
She squinted, and her voice came out in a tremble. “I didn’t think you existed. I’d lost all hope of ever finding anyone who would love me. But here…you are,” her voice broke on a fresh sob.
She set her face against his shoulder and wept some more. He tightened his hold on her.
“I think, my dear, that we are two of a kind,” he whispered into her hair as he brushed a kiss across her scalp.
She calmed down then and mumbled something about needing a Kleenex. He reached up and liberated one from the box on the top of his piano. He handed it to her. She blew her nose several times before sliding the spent Kleenex into her pocket.
Then she lifted her head to gaze into his eyes. She leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. Why did Yoongi’s mouth feel like her home?
After several moments of their delighting in each other’s touch, she drew back and gazed up into his beautiful, mahogany eyes.
“Yoongi?”
“Mmm?” He glanced away.
She looked down at her lap. “Why did you take a job at my appa’s company?”
“I came for you.” His breath passed over her hair.
She lifted her head, and her eyes pierced his. “What?”
He swallowed. “I want to marry you, Nari.”
All the air left the room. Had he just inhaled it all and left her with none?
“But I want to do it the right way. I won’t be the reason you never talk to your appa again. I thought that if I could prove myself to him, then maybe he would accept me, and he’d approve of our marriage.”
She furrowed her brow. “Then…does he know that you’re working there?”
“I don’t think so.” He frowned. “I started at the bottom on purpose. I thought that if I could honestly work my way up from the bottom, perhaps I could earn his respect.”
Her eyes flooded with such emotion that she had to blink. “So…when I thought you’d deserted me…”
“I had come for you.” He sighed. “I just couldn’t let you know. I…I’m working on me, Nari. Trying to make myself at least a little bit worthy of you.”
She drew her eyebrows together. “What are you talking about?”
He sighed. “I know you don’t want a guy who drinks. I had to get that under control.”
“Why do you drink, Yoongi? Or why did you drink?”
He ran his hand through his hair. He didn’t want to talk about that.
This was the question he’d been dreading.
Are you seriously going to stop it here?
