I’m Just Real Me – Chapter 6: Echoing Light

It was called Echoing Light.   And the text message below it was a password.  With great curiosity, Cami clicked the link.  It took her to a YouTube channel.

It wasn’t a video.  The background was a picture.  It seemed familiar.  But it wasn’t in focus, so she couldn’t really make it out.  The title at the bottom read Echoing Light – I’m just Real Me.  There were no views and no comments.

She clicked the play button.  And the most mesmerizing and melancholy melody assailed her ears.  And swamped her soul as a man began to sing in a low, rumbly tone.

Nami wasn’t a girl!  Nami was a man!  She was shocked.  And a little disturbed.  She was suddenly glad that she hadn’t given him any of her personal information.

But he sounded familiar.  Then she realized why.  He sounded like Namjoon!  Was Nami actually Namjoon?!

No way!  There was no way that Namjoon had taken time to find a lonely girl on Weverse and befriend her on Twitter.  He also would never release one of his songs to a stranger before he’d shown it to the whole of ARMY.

But as she listened to the beautiful song, she couldn’t deny Nami’s talent.  The music flowing from her phone’s speaker was stunningly beautiful as was the voice that had begun singing to her.

“Spent last night dancing round my room,

Darkly wandering in my gloom.

Spent last night singing and humming,

Darkly wondering what’s coming.

“Is it my perspective that needs to change?

Something in my heart must be rearranged?

“Spent tonight staring at the moon,

Softly reflecting the sun’s bloom.

Spent tonight staring at the stars,

Softly wondering who we are.”

The slow song picked up speed during the interlude that led into a more intense chorus.  His comforting voice wrapped around her again.  He rapped the first line, but he sang the next two.

“Will I always be a pale shadow

Of a bright and shining star?

You know who you are.

You know who you are.”

Then his soft voice rumbled in a pleasing rap again.  It soothed her frayed nerves.

“Will I always cower in your light,

Never infused with all that’s right?

Never to grasp the greater things?

The saddest songs only I’ll sing.

“Who am I?

Who am I?

Why am I here?

Why do I fear?

“Who am I?

Who am I?

Why do I sigh?

Why can’t I fly?”

Another interlude now slowed down the song as it approached the second stirring verse.  His rough rumble sounded in her ears once more as he began to sing in that delightful low tone again.

“Spent today staring at the sun.

Why’s it the brightly shining one?

Spent today hiding from its glare.

Scorching heat more than I can bear.

“It is my perspective that needs to change.

Something in my heart must be rearranged.

“Spent this hour dancing in the light.

I’ve found the energy to fight.

Spent this hour basking in its rays,

Dreaming of some more joyful days.”

Once again, the song picked up speed as he returned to the chorus.  But it wasn’t quite the same, and its melody even seemed to soar higher this time.  Only the second and third lines were sung.  The rest flowed forth in a resplendent rap.

“Wasn’t born to be a pale shadow

Of a bright and shining star.

I know who you are.

I know who you are.

“I was born to become your light,

To be infused with all that’s right.

Surely I’m meant for greater things,

For more beautiful songs to sing.

“Who am I?

Who am I?

You draw me near.

I’ve nought to fear.

“Who am I?

Who am I?

Echoing light,

‘Twas born to fly.”

Then he surprised her again with a short bridge that alternated between singing and rapping.  The first few words of each phrase were sung in his pleasing tone, but then he lightly rapped the ending words.

“I was born to fly

On your rays.

Echo your light

And all your ways.

“Echo your light.

Echo your light.

Disturb the night.

Echo your light.”

Then at the end, in a cool effect, the last three words echoed over and over again.  Beginning quite loudly, those three words reverberated a little more quietly each time they sounded.  As though the ripple was getting weaker with each new sounding.

“ECHO YOUR LIGHT.

“ECHO YOUR LIGHT.

“Echo your light.

“Echo your light.

“Echo your light.”

Finally, the last one was but a breath.

“Echo your light.”

His song was…breathtaking!
