Taehyung had noticed Nia being more distant the past week. She’d only skipped happily into work that one day. He was beginning to worry. What had made her so happy and then been taken from her?
He decided to invite her out for dinner again. This time, at a restaurant.
“Can I bring my fiancé?”
That question caught him off guard. What was going on? She’d never made an attempt to have him meet her fiancé. But nonetheless, he agreed. He was now curious as to why she’d asked. But he was also nervous.
When he walked into the restaurant that night, he was surprised to discover her already there with her fiancé. They were sitting at the table he’d reserved. But what surprised him was who her fiancé was. It was Jung Hoseok. The son of his greatest business rival. He now wondered how on earth Nia had gotten the job as his secretary. And why. Was she a spy? He panicked a bit at that thought. But he knew she was too much of an angel to do something like that.
He joined them a moment later, looking at Hobi with a questioning look on his face.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Hobi joked, trying to lighten the mood.
“Do you two know each other?” Nia asked, surprised.
“His father is my greatest business rival,” Taehyung responded calmly.
Nia looked up at him with a fearful expression on her face. “I- he’s what?”
“Nia, it’s ok.” Hobi put his hand on her shoulder. “We won’t tell him.”
Taehyung instantly nodded in agreement. He didn’t need more drama at work. He had already had a few people ask if he was dating Nia. He didn’t need anyone knowing she was engaged to the heir of their rival company.
Nia let out a puff of breath. “The reason I asked if I could bring Hobi tonight…was because I had something to ask you. But I wasn’t brave enough to do it alone.”
Taehyung just stared at her, simply knowing what she’d ask. If he’d had a doubt earlier, he didn’t now. She had to know. What else would she be asking? It would explain why she’d distanced herself this week. She’d figured it out, and then decided
“Did we know each other before…?”
There was a heavy silence after the words left Nia’s mouth. Taehyung wasn’t sure what to do. Especially now that he knew who her fiancé was. Should he be honest? Or was it better if she didn’t know? He swallowed.
“We did. Why do you ask?”
“Because…I found something that reminded me of you.” Nia pulled out her phone and showed Taehyung a picture of one of her paintings. It was the one where he was staring up at the sky and she had painted his profile.
“The other day we were in a meeting and I happened to glance at your profile. It reminded me of this painting. And I think…it’s because it is you.”
Taehyung stared at it for a few moments. He remembered when she’d painted it. It was the summer before she’d been diagnosed. The last day before Moon had moved. They’d all went down to the pond to do some star gazing. And as always, Nia had brought her camera for to take pictures for reference.
“Mr. Kim?” Nia asked softly, breaking him from his reverie.
“It…”
