In Our Next Lives – Chapter 27: Old Friends

The next day came all too quick.  They had to head into work early this morning, so Taehyung and Nia were up at five thirty.  They were out of the house by six and stopped by their favorite café to get coffee and donuts before they started the day.  Shooting days were the worst.  It wasn’t often either of them had anything to do with the shoots, but occasionally there was someone more famous who wanted to meet with the CEO personally.  So here they were.

Taehyung had yet to tell Nia who it was they were meeting today, so she was nervous.  She knew nothing about modeling in Paris either, so her intrigue was even greater.

——————–

At eight am sharp, the distinct clicking of heels could be heard from down the hall.  The office was eerily silent, as if everyone were holding their breath.  The door to Taehyung’s office swung inwards a moment later to reveal a smiling Mrs. Jeon and a girl with long, ombre pink hair.  Her eyes widened as she walked in.

“Long time no see, Tae.” She turned to Nia and looked her up and down. “Is it really you?  I thought you were dead.”

Nia stared up at the lady, completely confused.  She looked far different than Nia had expected.  She’d expected a Caucasian girl with pale skin, light hair, and blue eyes.  Not a Korean girl with tan skin, brown eyes, and dark roots.

“Do you know me?” Nia asked.

“You’ve forgotten?  We were friends all through middle school and high school.”

Realization dawned on Nia, and she turned to Taehyung with wide eyes.  He just smiled at her.  She turned back to the model.

“Moon?”

She grinned. “You do remember!” she looked at Taehyung and then back at Nia. “You two are cute as ever.  Are you married yet?” she turned back to Taehyung. “Why didn’t you tell me she wasn’t dead!”

“See, there was a slight problem.  You changed your phone number in the past year, and I had no way to reach you,” he replied smoothly.

Mrs. Jeon, meanwhile, was feeling very out of place.  She was awkwardly standing next to Moon waiting to be dismissed.  Nia noticed and took pity on her, waving her out of the room.

“We met by chance in August,” Nia informed Moon.

“You two have so much explaining to do!” Moon exclaimed. “I see no wedding rings, and you just met again last year?  This is absurd!”

“Well, you see, Nia didn’t even have any memories until a few weeks ago.”

“What?!  That’s no good!”

“Now, hang on.” Nia put a stop to their conversation. “Are you telling me this shoot was just an excuse to get her here from Paris?”

Taehyung looked mysterious. “Well, I had no other way to contact her….”

Nia looked at Moon. “I have to say, you don’t look anything how I remember.”

“You remember her?” Taehyung asked, quite surprised.

“The other night, Mrs. Jeon took me to the pond.  I remembered the last night the three of us were together.”

Taehyung’s eyes widened.  He turned to her. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

Nia shrugged. “It’s been a long weekend.”

“How much time do we have this morning?” Moon suddenly interjected. “We have so much to talk about!”

——————–

Moon proceeded to spend the next two hours embarrassing Taehyung and Nia.  She made it very clear that she was not happy about the fact that they weren’t married with two kids yet.  And Taehyung was starting to regret inviting her.  Eventually, Nia managed to change the topic.

“Tell us how you’ve been.  Any boyfriend?”

“Nope!  It’s hard to find a guy with good intentions nowadays.  They’re all after me just for money or because of how ‘hot’ I am.” Moon shook her head. “I’ve given up.  Guess I’ll just be single for the rest of my life.”

“I’m sure you’ll find someone.  Don’t worry.”

Moon shrugged. “We’ll see.”
