In Our Next Lives – Chapter 61: Birthday Wishes

Taehyung opened his desk and pulled out a list.  He’d been waiting months for this.  He was giddy for tomorrow.  It was Nia’s birthday, and he had so much planned.

“Tan!  Let’s go for a walk!” Nia yelled down the hall.

Taehyung heard little paws padding against the floor and laughed.  He peeked his head out of his office.

“Hi there,” Nia laughed as she saw him. “Are you going into work today?”

“Yeah, I have some meetings in the afternoon.  There wasn’t anything to do this morning besides paperwork, so I’m here until one.”

“I’ll make you some lunch when I get back, then.” Nia leaned up and pecked him on the lips. “I don’t think I’ll be gone long.  It’s near forty outside.”

Taehyung whistled. “That hot?  Might want to put on some sunscreen before you go out.”

Nia laughed. “I will, don’t worry.”

——————–

Taehyung had planned to make breakfast before Nia got up in the morning, but he apparently hadn’t woken up early enough for that.  He rolled over in bed that morning to find the other side empty.  Yeontan was still sound asleep in her bed on the floor.  He looked up at the clock.  It was only six.  Where was Nia?  He dragged himself to the kitchen a moment later.  He was still nearly half asleep.

“Good morning, Tae!” Nia jumped into his arms, pulling herself up into his arms before wrapping her legs around his waist.

He smiled. “Good morning, sweetheart.  Happy birthday.”

Her grin melted into a soft smile as she remembered him calling her that long ago.  He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

“Why are you up so early?” he yawned.

“I don’t know.  I woke up about twenty minutes ago and couldn’t go back to sleep, so I decided I’d make breakfast.” She responded as she set her feet back on the ground.

He chuckled. “I was going to make breakfast this morning.  You weren’t supposed to have to do any work today.”

“Nah, that’s no fun.  I’m not even working a job anymore.  Let me do some of the work!  It’s your one day off; you should be the one resting!”

“We haven’t spent your birthday together in nine years though,” Taehyung whined. “I want to pamper you!”

She shrugged. “I’m sure you’ve got other things planned.  I know you.  Just let me make breakfast, you goose!  Go back to bed, and I’ll bring it to you once it’s done.”

“Ok, ok.”

Nia grinned and grabbed his collar, pulling him down for one more kiss before patting his chest. “Go.  I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Nia came back to their room a few minutes later with a plate of cinnamon rolls.

“So, what do you have planned for today?” she asked.

He eyed the plate in her hand. “You planned this, didn’t you?”

She laughed. “You caught me.  I made the rolls last night and let them rise overnight.  You didn’t answer my question, though.”

“Huh.  I’m not telling you!  It’s a surprise!”

She huffed as she took a bite of her cinnamon roll. “No fair.”

“Well, you didn’t tell me you were making these!” he mumbled around a mouthful of food.

“Touché.”

“What do you think we’re doing today?”

“It would be nice to use that pool we have out back.  And maybe go out to dinner.” She paused.  Teasingly, she added, “and maybe do a few other things.”

He choked. “Oh, I see.  Can we just skip to number three?”

“What?  No!  I want to go swimming!”

Taehyung grinned. “Ok, fine.”

“You know, I think this is the happiest my birthday has been in a while.”

Taehyung frowned. “Does your family not celebrate it?”

“They do.  It just…always felt like an excuse to go buy a fancy dinner, honestly.”

“Oh,” he frowned.

“Wasn’t your birthday over the winter?  Why didn’t we do anything to celebrate?”

He shrugged. “Didn’t really feel too important, I guess.  I haven’t celebrated it in a few years, and it was right after you broke up with Hobi.  I wasn’t even sure you’d remembered, so I didn’t bother saying anything.”

“Aw, Tae!  I wish I’d remembered.  I would’ve done something for you!”

He smiled softly. “You can do something this year if you’d like.  Today’s about you, though, so don’t sulk about it.  You can sulk in December.”

Nia laughed. “You’re ridiculous.”

He grinned. “I know.  Now finish eating so we can go swim!”
