In Our Next Lives – Chapter 64: Framing the Past

Jin had shown up at Hyuna’s door with a bouquet of flowers tonight.  Hyuna stared down at them in shock when she opened the door.  It was a dozen roses nestled among baby’s breath and some leafy looking things.

“I remember you saying your favorite flowers were roses.” Jin commented shyly as he held them out to her.

“Oh…you remembered.”

They hadn’t gotten a lot of time to talk in the past few months.  They spent a lunch break together here and there and had the occasional dinner date, but they were both working crazy schedules and barely had time to fit the other in.  Part of her wished to go back to college days when the only thing she had to worry about besides her grades was making it to her one job as a waitress at a fancier restaurant downtown.

“They’re beautiful.  Thank you, Jin.” She murmured after realizing she’d been staring at him for far too long. “Would you like to come in?”

He nodded.

“Don’t mind the mess.  I haven’t had time to clean much the past week and my roommate’s a bit of a slob.”

Jin laughed as he looked around. “It’s not too bad in here.  One of my roommates is worse.”

“You’ve got roommates?”

“Yeah, I live with a few of my acting buddies.  One of them seems to think it’s reasonable to live in a garbage dump.  He’s constantly throwing trash everywhere.  My other roommate and I are this close to throwing him out.”

“I won’t complain about piles of clothes on the floor again.”

Jin grinned. “How do you feel about doing something a little more formal tonight?  I got us reservations at that place downtown that you mentioned.  I feel like we haven’t really had a chance to have a nice date, so I figured we could do it tonight?”

“Oh.” Hyuna looked him up and down.  The button-up and slacks made sense now. “Sure.  Can I go change real quick?”

“Of course,” he nodded.

While she was gone, he studied the pictures on her wall.  There weren’t many, but there was a few of her family and one of her and her roommate.  The one that caught his eye was the one of her and a boy that looked to be about the same age as her.  They were wearing high school uniforms, and they were both smiling at the camera.  This had to be her and her brother, Jin supposed.  He knew the two of them were only about a year apart, and they’d been pretty close when Jin had known her.

The next picture Jin saw was the one of her family.  She and her brother had been toddlers in this picture, and each of her parents appeared to be trying to corral one of them.  He smiled.  They looked like such a cute family.

“Hey, Jin, ready to go?”

Jin turned around to find Hyuna standing by the counter.  She was tugging her shoes on.  Her dress was a short, black thing that ended right above her knee.  It was fairly form-fitting up top, and it belled out a bit at the bottom.  It had one sleeve that hugged her shoulder, but the other shoulder was left bare.

“I’m ready.  You look beautiful.”

Hyuna smiled. “Thanks.  My mom bought me this dress last time we went shopping together.  It’s been a while.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing, really.  We’re just not good at keeping in contact.  I seem to be that way with most people,” she smiled sadly.

“Ah, I see.  Don’t worry.  I’ll keep in contact with you even if no one else does.  I’ve been waiting for years to be able to talk to you again.”

Hyuna smiled at him.  She was still unsure about him if she were honest with herself.  She was scared he’d leave her again.

He reached out and took her hand. “Let’s go to dinner now.”
