Nia was sitting on the couch eating ice cream when her phone rang.  She picked it up.  It was Sua.  She sighed and answered it reluctantly.

“Hey, Nia!  Are you ok?  Are you sick?”

“Um…” Nia sniffled, wiping her tears with her sleeve. “No…I…um…”

“Is something wrong?” Sua asked gently.

“I’m not…having a baby.” Nia managed to spit out.

“Oh.” Sua gasped softly. “Do you need anything?  Do you want to…cancel the wedding?”

“No!  No…I’ll be ok.  I just…might not come help with the triplets for a few weeks if that’s ok?”

“Nia, it’s no problem.  I can handle them, and I’m sure Moon would love to come help.  Is there anything you need help with?  Can I cook you dinner or finish up wedding plans or…?”

“No, no.  You’re busy enough with three babies on your hands.  It’s ok.”

“Are you sure?  I can’t even imagine how depressed you are.”

“Honestly, the only thing left we really needed to do was buy something for the babies to wear in the wedding.  And I have one last dress fitting.  And Tae and I can handle dinner.  We can order takeout…or something.”

“All right.  Call me if you need to talk, ok?  I’m free all day.”

Nia went silent for a few moments, not entirely wanting to hang up.

“Nia?  You still there?”

“Can I um…ask you something?”

“Of course!  What is it?”

“Is there…something wrong with me?  I mean…the baby barely lasted seven weeks….  I’m scared.  What if I can’t have kids?”

“Oh, Nia….  A lot of girls have miscarriages early on.  It just happens sometimes.  I had two before I got pregnant with the triplets.”

Nia gasped. “Really?”

“Yeah.  I thought I’d never be able to have kids.  I had both of them right after we got married, and I told Jungkook I couldn’t try anymore.  The triplets were a surprise, honestly.  And look, now I have three!”

Nia let out a shaky breath. “Yeah…thanks for talking to me.”

“Sure thing.  Are you home alone right now?”

“No.  Tae took the day off.  He’s napping right now, though.  I don’t think he fell back asleep after waking up at three this morning.”

“He took the day off, then?  That’s good.”

“Yeah.  Can I let you go now?”

“Sure.  I hope you feel better!”

“Bye.”

Nia tossed her phone onto the other end of the couch before taking another bite of her ice cream.  It was melting already.  She sighed.   Her life seemed to keep spiraling downhill at this point.  As much as she didn’t want to admit it, she missed her mother.  The woman she’d been before Nia had been diagnosed.

Nia needed answers.  And something to distract her from the stinging pain of losing a baby.  She took her ice cream sludge over to the trash can and threw it away before heading for her bedroom.

“Hey, Tae?” she whispered, shaking him slightly. “I’m going out for a bit, ok?”

“Hmm?”

“I’m going out for an hour, ok?  I’ll be back soon.”

He nodded, not fully coming to his senses. “Ok.”
