Kindred Spirits – Chapter 8: Midnight Eyes

She hadn’t distracted him.  He decided to be blunt.

“What did I do to make you uncomfortable?”

Her eyes widened momentarily before she sank her nose into her cup and buried her eyes in the bottom of it.

“Daniela?”

“Are you always this persistent with the other guys?”

He chuckled.  “Who do you think taught me to hash things out?”

She smiled ruefully.  “I can see that.  But you’re going to make me admit something embarrassing, and then I’ll want to run out the door.”

His midnight eyes delved into hers when she glanced at him.  She sighed again.  The beautiful boy had the most amazing eyes.

“Your eyes are so beautiful,” she muttered under her breath.

Those stunning eyes widened in surprise.  “You think so?”

In that moment, she realized she had misjudged him earlier.  He hadn’t been relishing the way she felt about him.  He didn’t know what she was thinking.

“About earlier, forget it.  I was wrong.  I was messed up in my thinking.  I really am fine now.”  She gave him a genuine smile, and he sighed with relief.

“I’m glad because I really like you, and I don’t want you to leave any earlier than necessary.  And I certainly don’t want to hurt your feelings or make you feel uncomfortable.”

She gazed at him with great doe eyes as her heart melted once again.  Jungkook really was a total sweetheart.

“Number seven?” came the server’s voice.

Jungkook and Daniela broke their eye contact and glanced up at the girl.  Jungkook nodded.  The girl set a huge tray of goodies on the middle of the table between them, picked up their number, and walked away.

Daniela’s eyes grew as wide as saucers.  “Jungkook,” she breathed, “are we about to feed a small village?”

He burst out laughing.  Causing those stunning eyes to bounce up and down as they alternated between half-moons and quarter-moons.  There were a wealth of adorable wrinkles rippling through his cheeks too.

“I really wanted to pick something you liked besides cheesecake.”

He wanted to please her.  That’s what she heard.  Her smile faded as she looked up at his gorgeous face.  His eyes met hers a moment later, and his laughter died.  They simply stared at one another for a time.

Ohhh.  Those eyes.

One look from those midnight eyes was all it took to melt her.  She’d gladly forego the goodies between them if she could just live in those eyes.  She sighed with longing.

For his part, Jungkook was enjoying Daniela’s nut-brown orbs.  Suddenly, he reached out across the table and grasped one of the bows of her glasses delicately between two long, slender fingers.

Reflexively, she moved back as, startled, she asked, “What are you doing?”

Moving with her, Jungkook’s fingers rode on her glasses as he responded gently, “Can I take your glasses off for a minute?  I want to see your eyes.”

Yes, as soon as you scrape me up off the floor.
