Moonflower – Chapter 46: Heat

They ate in a companionable silence for a while.  Jina was still grazing.  She wasn’t hungry anymore, but everything tasted so good, and who knew when such a bounty would ever come her way again?  So she took advantage of the moment.

Jungkook smiled as he watched her.  “Where are you putting all that food?” he asked good-naturedly as his eyes slid over her tiny frame.

She glanced up at him.  “What?” she asked defensively.  “I haven’t eaten in twenty-four hours!”

“Mmm-hmm,” Jungkook smiled.

She stared at him.  She suddenly felt self-conscious and had absolutely no idea what to say to him next.  He was smiling at her in the most disconcerting way right now.  If she didn’t know better, she’d think that the intense expression in those midnight eyes was what was releasing butterflies to careen around inside her belly.

She cleared her throat and averted her gaze before popping another bite of kimchi into her mouth.  Its heat was opening her sinuses.  She inhaled through her nose.  It was blissful.  She closed her eyes and did it again.

Jungkook watched her as he scarfed down his meal.  He was enjoying his food almost as much as he was relishing watching her right now.  Though he could not have explained why he suddenly found her so fascinating.  She’d closed her eyes.  Her countenance was upturned as though seeking the face of the sun.  Her lips were wearing a half-smile.  She seemed…content.

How strange.  Had he ever seen her with such an expression before?

Perhaps its oddity was its allure.  Whatever it was, he couldn’t tear his eyes from her face.  He watched as she inhaled deeply several times through her nose.  Then, without warning, her eyes popped open, and he found himself being swallowed whole by those great obsidian orbs.  Which widened in surprise.

“What?” she whispered.  Even more self-conscious now.  “Do I have something on my face?”  She reached up and brushed her slender fingertips across her lips.

“Yes,” Jungkook murmured.

“What?” she asked.

“A smile.  You’re content.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen you happy before.”

He instantly grinned at her, flashing two rows of perfect porcelain teeth at her.  His smile transformed his face into something even more beautiful than his usual expression.  His captivating midnight eyes shrank to half-moons that still managed to beguile her.

She blinked as her heart skipped a beat.  The boy was too gorgeous for her own good!  If he continued to smile at her like that, she was likely to give him anything he wanted.

She swallowed her bite of kimchi before standing up abruptly and walking across the room.  Jungkook watched her go.  Was she embarrassed?

He glanced down at his plate.  It was now empty.  He looked at the food remaining on the tray.

“Jina, do you want anything else to eat?” he called quietly after her.

“No,” came her soft reply.

“If you’re done eating, come to bed with me,” he requested.

She spun around.

That got her attention.

He grinned.  Upsetting the balance of her stomach again.

“To bed?” she echoed.

What exactly did he have in mind?

He nodded.  “You’re still recovering.  You’ve been up for quite a while, haven’t you?  You should take it easy.  Sleep some more.  Let your body rest.”

He held her gaze.  She looked spooked.  Heat was creeping into her cheeks.

“Come on,” he enticed her with a secret smile.  “Maybe I want to hold you in my arms while you fall asleep.”

Was Jungkook…flirting with her?
