“Kookie, please stay home,” Taeyeon pouted. “I don’t want you to go.”

“Yeonie, I have to.  Don’t worry, I’ll be home before you know it.” Jungkook walked to the door, pocketing his wallet and grabbing his keys.  He turned back to Taeyeon. “Do I get a kiss before I go?”

Taeyeon, still pouting, trudged over to him. “Yes…” She pecked Jungkook’s lips softly.

Jungkook smiled. “I love you, baby.  I’ll be back.”

Taeyeon nodded slowly as Jungkook walked out the door. “Ok…bye…”

——————–

“There’s been a crash at the intersection of 21st and West Street.  Supposedly someone’s dead.”

“All right.  Let’s go,” Jungkook tossed the ambulance keys to his partner and they quickly ran to the ambulance.  Jungkook flicked on the siren, and they headed off to the crash with another ambulance.

They arrived at the crash within a minute, and Jungkook immediately recognized one of the cars…as Taeyeon’s.  He jumped out of the ambulance and quickly ran to the car, which, thankfully, was still upright.  Jungkook tugged the door open.  Taeyeon was laying there, unconscious.  Or at least Jungkook hoped she was only unconscious.  He pulled her out of the car, laying her on the pavement next to the car.  Then he checked her pulse.  And let out a huge sigh of relief.

“Stretcher!” he yelled.  He really hoped she would be all right.

——————–

Taeyeon had been driving down the road on her way to the store.  She had decided to do some shopping to distract herself from Jungkook’s absence.  She had just driven into the intersection when she saw something nearing her quickly out of the corner of her eye.  She turned her head just in time to see another car T-bone hers.  The car hit hers with such force that it obliterated the passenger side door of Taeyeon’s car and sent her flying into the window.  Then the whole world went dark.

——————–

Jungkook stared down at Taeyeon.  She seemed to be breathing all right. She had fared much better than the other driver, having suffered only two broken ribs.  The other driver had died on the spot.

Tears started to spill down Jungkook’s cheeks.  He bent down to kiss Taeyeon’s forehead, his tears now falling on her face.

“Yeon, baby…I’m so sorry…” He whispered against her forehead.

“Why…why are you sorry…?”

Jungkook gasped and pulled away a bit, looking straight into Taeyeon’s dazed and tired eyes.

“Yeon…if I hadn’t left, this wouldn’t have happened…” Jungkook’s tears were falling on Taeyeon’s cheeks now.

“Oh, Jungkookie…” Taeyeon breathed.  She reached up to wipe a tear from Jungkook’s eye. “It’s not your fault…”

Jungkook sniffled as more tears fell down his cheeks.  He gently draped his arm over Taeyeon’s waist before bending to press another kiss into her forehead. “I’m so glad you’re ok.”

Taeyeon reached up and snaked her arm around Jungkook’s waist.  She pulled him closer, burying her face in his neck.  They just sat there in silence for a minute.  Jungkook broke the silence by pulling away slightly again.  He moved down until he was nose to nose with Taeyeon, their lips a scant inch from each other.  Taeyeon suddenly recalled something in that moment.

“Do you remember how we met?” she whispered, her breath passing over Jungkook’s lips.

Jungkook did.  He remembered exactly how they had met.

It had been in this exact room, actually.  Jungkook had walked in, studying the chart in his hands.  It had been his first day actually working here as an employee.  Previously he had just been a volunteer.  He skimmed the chart, looking for all the important facts.

Im Taeyeon, hospitalized for food poisoning, currently on a nausea reducer IV.

Jungkook looked up at the girl laying in the bed.  She was staring dazedly out the window.

“Im Taeyeon?”

“Hmm?” the girl averted her gaze to Jungkook.

Taeyeon gasped.  She had thought she was alone.  But the cute nurse who had just walked through the door was worth her daydreams getting interrupted.

“Um…” Jungkook was at a loss for words. “I came…to check on you.  Do you need anything?”

Taeyeon just stared blankly up at her nurse. “Uh…” She needed to come up with something.  She couldn’t just sit here staring at this guy all night! “I…I’m kinda thirsty…do you think you could bring me some apple juice?”

“Um…yeah.  I’ll be back,” Jungkook spun on his heel and headed back out the door.  He returned not even two minutes later, handing Taeyeon the apple juice.

“Thank you.” Taeyeon gratefully took the apple juice.

Jungkook nodded. “Do you have any family coming to visit you?”

Taeyeon shook her head, avoiding eye contact with Jungkook.

“Oh.  Would you like me to keep you company?”

She looked up abruptly. “Don’t you have other patients, though?”

Jungkook shook his head. “It’s my first day, so they only assigned me you.”

“Oh.  I guess you can stay then,” Taeyeon spoke to her shirt.

Jungkook pulled up a chair and sat down next to the bed. “May I ask…why you don’t have any visitors?”

Taeyeon flicked the straw of the apple juice box in her hand. “I don’t have any family…” she replied in a soft whisper. “…except my step mom…and she hates me…”

Jungkook watched as her eyes clouded with tears.  This poor girl!

“You don’t have any friends?”

Taeyeon shook her head. “I only have a boyfriend…and he doesn’t really care about me either…so I didn’t tell him I’m in the hospital…”

Jungkook’s heart shattered.  And in that moment, he decided he had to find a way to protect this girl.  Somehow…
