Rather Dead Than Without You – Chapter 8: Recovery or Relapse?

Taeyeon didn’t sleep much that night.  She was too focused on making sure Jungkook was ok.  He had slept the night through, her body keeping him warm the whole night.

Taeyeon watched the closed shades on the window as they slowly lit up.  Dawn was breaking now.  It made her feel a bit safer to know there was light outside now.  She glanced up at Jungkook, who was sound asleep but breathing through his mouth now.  He was snoring softly too, but Taeyeon found that she didn’t mind.  She stared up at Jungkook for a bit longer before her eyes finally gave up.  They fluttered shut, tiredness now overtaking her.  But she told herself she needed to stay awake and keep an eye on Jungkook.  She opened her eyes again and looked up at Jungkook who, to her surprise, was staring right back down at her.

“Good morning, Yeonie.” Jungkook smiled. “You looked tired.”

“I didn’t sleep a lot…” Taeyeon admitted.

Jungkook frowned. “I told you that you didn’t need to keep an eye on me.  You should’ve slept.”

“I know…: Taeyeon was avoiding Jungkook’s gaze now.

Jungkook sat up a bit, wrapping Taeyeon’s legs around his waist. “C’mon.  We both need more sleep.  Let’s go to our room.”

Taeyeon simply nodded in response as Jungkook stood up and carried her to their room, trying his best not to smash her arm in between them.  But Taeyeon was internally freaking out.  Had Jungkook said it was their room?  She felt like crying.  Jungkook was too sweet.

Jungkook pulled back the cover before gently laying Taeyeon down on the bed.  Then he pulled the covers over her and crawled over her onto the other side of the bed.  He quickly snaked under the covers before huddling up against Taeyeon.

“Still cold?” she asked.

“Yeah…”

Taeyeon shifted herself a bit until she faced Jungkook, then she wrapped her right arm around Jungkook’s waist, pulling him closer to her.  Jungkook shivered a bit but gladly reciprocated.

“You warmer now?”

“Yeah…get some sleep now.”

Taeyeon smiled. “All right.”

——————–

Jungkook blinked his eyes open.  Despite the curtains being shut, he could tell it was mid-day by the light that was sneaking through the shades.  He looked at Taeyeon.  And then realized they were only a few inches from each other.  He could feel her breath passing over his face, too.  He just stared at her for a minute.  She was so beautiful.  Her dark eyebrows, her straight nose, her perfect lips.  Jungkook sighed.  He remembered what it was like to kiss those lips.  Just then, Taeyeon’s dark brown eyes fluttered open.  Jungkook smiled at her.

“Hi, sleepyhead.  Did you get enough sleep?” Jungkook asked softly.

“I did.  Do you feel any better?”

“Much better.”

Taeyeon pulled her hand up off Jungkook’s waist and placed it on his forehead.

“I think your temperature’s normal again,” she smiled.

“Yep, thanks to you.” Jungkook bent forward and kissed her nose.  She stared shocked at him for a minute, making Jungkook grin. “You’re so cute, Yeon.”

Jungkook watched as she turned bright red.

“Ah…Jungkook…” Taeyeon buried her face in Jungkook’s shoulder in embarrassment.

Jungkook rubbed her back. “Do I make you flustered?”

“…yes…but you make me feel special too…”

“I do?”

Taeyeon nodded, her face still buried in Jungkook’s shoulder. “You have since the day we met.”

——————–

Jungkook stood at the stove, watching as his ramen cooked.  He felt much better than he had the previous night.  He had even been able to convince Taeyeon to let him pick up all the blankets in the hallway.  And now he had convinced her to let him cook dinner.  She was curled up on the couch in the living room, staring off into space.

“Yeon?” Jungkook sat next to her on the couch, having just finished making the ramen.

“Hmm?” Taeyeon looked over at him.

“You ok?”

“Yeah…just tired…” she sighed. “I wish my arm wasn’t broken…sleeping would be easier…”

“Aw, Yeon…don’t worry.  You only have to keep the cast for six more weeks.”

Taeyeon nodded. “I know.  It’s just…I normally sleep on my stomach…so it’s strange to have to sleep on my back…”

Jungkook rubbed her shoulder softly. “Do you wanna skip dinner and just go to sleep?”

“Well…I haven’t eaten today…but my stomach’s pretty used to that…and I’m really tired…so, yeah…”

Jungkook smiled softly. “All right.  I’ll go put the ramen away.  Meet you in bed?”

Taeyeon nodded, returning Jungkook’s smile tiredly.

——————–

Taeyeon was already sound asleep and buried under the thick folds of Jungkook’s comforter by the time Jungkook entered the room.  He smiled.  She looked so peaceful.  One thing was odd, though.  She was breathing through her mouth.  He climbed into bed next to her, hoping she hadn’t caught his cold by taking care of him.  But her cheeks were a bit redder than usual.  He gently touched her cheek.  He sighed.  She definitely felt warm.  Jungkook laid down next to Taeyeon, scooting closer to her and wrapping his arm around her waist.  The same thing she had done for him this morning.

“I’m sorry, Yeonie…it’s my fault you’re sick…” Jungkook whispered.

“It’s ok…it’s not your fault…” was the soft but hoarse response Taeyeon gave.

Jungkook sighed.  They both needed some good rest tonight.
