Jiae stared out the window at the pouring rain. The dark clouds hung in the sky, but somehow made the dark night a little bit brighter. The city below was still wide awake, and she watched for a moment as the cars bustled around and the city lights shone bright. She wondered if one of those small cars was Tae’s. He was supposed to be home soon. But until then, she would just enjoy the rain.
She lay back down in bed, hiding the city so she could only see the crying clouds. This was one of the many upsides to living on the 25th floor. She continued to watch as the rain poured down. It fascinated her for some odd reason. It was just so pretty and soothing.
Just then, she heard a knock on the door. “Ji…are you still awake?” a deep voice asked as the door creaked a bit, indicating that it was slowly being opened. She turned back towards it.
“Yes, Tae, I’m still awake.” She replied to the figure hovering in the doorway.
Even in the darkness, she could see his face light up and a grin cover his face. She had stayed up purposefully so that she could cuddle him when he got home from his late shift tonight. She watched as he tugged his socks off and pulled his shirt over his head, revealing the soft skin of his torso. Then he tossed his shirt on the floor and crawled into bed next to her, pulling her to his chest and drawing the covers up over them. He buried his face in her hair. “I missed you…” he yawned softly.
“I missed you too, Tae-Tae.” She paused for a brief moment to enjoy the feel of being in his arms, his nose brushing her scalp. But then he yawned again. “Sleep. You’re clearly tired. You need some rest.” She whispered, not wanting to break the moment.
“Ok…goodnight…” He kissed the top of her head softly before dropping his head back onto the pillow.
“Goodnight.”
It was only minutes before his breathing evened out and his heartbeat slowed under her ear. She smiled softly. This was her favorite thing to do. Cuddle with Tae on a rainy night. It relaxed her a lot. She continued to listen to the rain pouring outside as it melded with the sound of Tae’s gentle heartbeat. Her eyes fluttered shut. She felt so lucky. She knew a lot of people got frightened by rain, though she could never figure out why they did. She was glad she wasn’t one of those people. She loved to bask in the sound of the rain. Even the thunder sounded beautiful to her. She continued listening to Tae’s heartbeat. And the sound of the rain hitting the window. It was so therapeutic. The sounds mixing together was starting to lull her to sleep now. She fought it, still wanting to just live in that moment. But soon, her tiredness overtook her, and she fell into a deep sleep.
