Still with You – Chapter 12: No Light in the Darkroom

“What?” Perplexed, Jungkook frowned.  “What on earth are you talking about?”

She was sobbing too hard now to explain.  He pulled her closer and tightened his arms around her.  She was obviously terrified of someone.  More than one someones.

“Who are you talking about?” he breathed into her hair as he planted a kiss on the top of her head.

“My father.  His minions.”

His minions?

“What would your father do to me?”

“Not him…His minions,” she sniffed then hiccupped.

“Why?”

“He wants me to marry someone in the company.”

“The company?”

She nodded.  She didn’t want to explain that part.  It was better if she didn’t.  Wasn’t it?

But he wasn’t going to let her off that easy.

“What company?”

She swallowed.  “Look.  My father is a very dangerous man.  Suffice it to say that the first time you were disciplined, you would walk away with some broken bones.  The next time, you might not be so lucky.”

His arms tightened around her.  This sounded eerily familiar.

“Okay.  That doesn’t bother me.”

She shoved against his chest as her head came up abruptly.  “I am not joking, Jungkook!  You need to take this seriously.”

“I am.”  His eyes were steady on hers.

Life is terribly ironic.

That’s what he was thinking.

“Everything is going to be okay.”  He paused for a moment.  “What is your father’s name?”

She swallowed.

Jungkook’s lightning-fast mind ran through a gamut of thoughts.  He had managed to disentangle himself from them.  They didn’t bother him anymore with such issues as who he could and couldn’t date.  He had set up so many balances and counterbalances should anything tragic befall him.  If he died or suffered a debilitating “accident,” proof positive would be sent to every police station in the country.  And every district attorney.  Just to ensure that someone would prosecute his father and the rest of them.  A multitude of news agencies would be also be made privy to his appa’s affairs.  They wouldn’t run from the chance to expose his evil deeds.

It seemed that Jungkook was going to have to put his connections to good use.  It was still to his father’s advantage to protect him.  If Jungkook died by any means – his father’s or someone else’s – the avalanche would be triggered.  And his father’s whole empire would come crumbling down.

So it was time to inform him of the situation.  Jungkook knew his father had already assigned him a security detail.  To make sure no accidents befell him.  Perhaps, they would up their efforts.

But that was only a temporary solution.  He wanted to marry this girl.  Hopefully, her father was an ally of his father.  But if he were, wouldn’t he have supported a marriage between them?

Maybe not.  Most people knew Jungkook was not active in the company.  Only his father was.  An active member would want to use his daughter to further his career.

“Lee Kwangjo.”

Her whispered words were sharp knives sliding into him.  She had just named his father’s mortal enemy.
