The Bride – Chapter 41: Amused

He decided to back off.  Until he was fully recovered.  He wasn’t about to make a move until then.  So he played it cool when she returned with his broth.

So did she.  She sat in the chair.

Inwardly, he groaned.  Disappointed.

But outwardly, he smiled at her, bent on charming her, and drank his broth.  Like a good, little patient.

But after a while, his stomach gave an angry rumble.

Her eyes grew round in surprise.  “Are you hungry, Beom Sook?  Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I didn’t know.  Not until my stomach voiced its concerns.”

She giggled.  “What sounds good?”

“Porridge.”

“Really?  The children grew tired of it quickly.”

“It sounds like heaven to me.”

“Then I shall bring you some directly.”

“Must you go?  Cannot you find a servant to fetch me some?” he asked, disgruntled.  “I’ve employed an army of servants in this house, yet we are all alone.”

Her eyes grew wide again.  “You’re complaining about being alone with me?”

Those glorious jade eyes grew round.  “No!  Not at all!  I’m complaining because I’m about to endure another five minutes without you.”

Her expression softened.  “You like me that much, Beom Sook?  That you don’t want to endure even five minutes without me?”

He shook his head.  “No…”

She frowned.

“I love you that much.”

Her heart instantly melted.

Her eyes lit up.  So did her face.

She stood up and leaned forward.  Until her nose was a mere three inches from his.  She stared down into his gorgeous eyes.  And then she brushed her lips across his cheek before breathing into his ear, “I’ll be right back.  I promise.”

She straightened, threw him a marvelous smile, and rushed out the door.  Bent on completing her task hurriedly.  She had a beloved to entertain.

She returned with a scroll and a bowl of porridge.

“I will read to you while you eat,” she offered kindly.

He groaned.  “Please tell me it’s not some informative piece that’s going to lull me to sleep again.”

She glanced down at it curiously.  “I don’t think so.  It’s a story that Bo A wrote.”

He perked up.  “Read on then.”

So she did.  And they were both quickly enthralled by the tiny author’s brilliant plot twists and amusing characters.  Her stories did, in fact, divert them both for the next two days as Beom Sook continued to recover.

But he was disappointed that night when his mother did convince the girl to sleep in her own bed.  Beom Sook then questioned just how wonderful his eomma was after all.
