The Piano – Chapter 2: Life Goes On – March 9, 2021

The sun was hiding its face when Yoongi awoke to a scuffle in the hallway outside his bedroom door.  As he rolled over and glanced at the glowing numbers of his digital clock, he realized why the darkness was overwhelming his room right now.  It was three-oh-nine in the morning.  The middle of the night still.  Who on earth was making such a commotion at this hour?

He dragged himself from bed to see what all the ruckus was about.  But as he opened his door and peeked out into the corridor, he found it empty.  Whoever the culprits had been, they were in the clear now.  He sighed and prepared to swing his door shut and return to the bliss of his bed for a few more hours.

But as he let go of that door, his eye suddenly fell to embrace the floor on the other side of that threshold, and he smiled as his door shut firmly.  For he had recognized the box resting outside his door.  It might be very early in the morning, but it was the morning of the next day.  Today was his birthday.  And someone had delivered his present.  Probably explaining all the commotion in the hallway.

He was the last birthday boy of the six-month birthday season that began with Jungkook and ended with him.  Yoongi was the final Bangtan boy to be blessed by his friends during a difficult season.  He was certain that box contained something very special.  And he didn’t want to open it hours before anyone else would be awake.  So he opened the door to retrieve it, swung his door shut again, set the black box on his desk, and headed back to bed.  There would be plenty of time to open it when he awoke.  After the sun had risen for the day.

––

The sun was shining unusually bright when Yoongi awoke later that morning.  He rolled over and glanced at the clock.  And his eyes sprang wide open in surprise.  It was after eleven!  How on earth had he slept this late?  And no one had woken him up!

Just then, a tiny knock sounded on his door.  “Yoongi?” came Jungkook’s soft voice.

“What is it, little one?” Yoongi called quietly in response.

The door opened, and Jungkook glanced into his hyung’s room.  “Happy Birthday!” he grinned.

“Thanks, Jungkookie.”  Yoongi yawned.

Jungkook glanced around the room and smiled as he saw the black box resting securely on his friend’s desk.  He quirked one dark eyebrow as his eyes met Yoongi’s as the older man finally sat up.  His rumpled hair was falling into his eyes.

“Did you open your present yet?” his maknae queried curiously.

Yoongi shook his head.  “I picked it up in the middle of the night, but I didn’t open it.”

Jungkook crossed the room to retrieve it.  He carried it over to his hyung.  As he held it out to him, he murmured, “Jin and I made you some kimchi stew.”

Yoongi’s eyes lit up.  “You did?!”

“Yes.  And, oh!”  Jungkook’s eyes widened as, startled, he turned back for the kitchen.  “Jimin picked you up some coffee.  I’ll be right back.”

A couple of moments later, he returned with an iced americano for the birthday boy.  He set it on the nightstand and glanced at the present.  Yoongi’s box was still undisturbed.

“Aren’t you going to open it?”

Yoongi peered up at his young friend.  “Eager for me to see what’s inside, hmm?  Jungkookie, is it possible that this box if from you?”

Jungkook’s lips curved into a subtle smile.  “Why don’t you open it up and find out?”

Yoongi stared down at the black box.  It was sporting a blue velvet ribbon.  One that looked just like the one that had adorned Hobi’s gift.  He smiled as he reached out to gently pull on that ribbon.  The neat bow fell apart as he tugged on the strip of navy fabric.  He glanced up at Jungkook before removing the lid.  Yoongi smiled as he peeped down into the box.  And found a scroll that had been neatly sealed with a matching midnight blue ribbon.

He peered up at Jungkook.  “This looks awfully familiar,” came his delightful rumble.

“It does, doesn’t it?” Jungkook wrinkled his brow.

“Mm-hmm.”

The younger man sat down next to him on the bed as he withdrew the scroll.  Yoongi pulled the ribbon off and unfurled the paper.  His eyes perused its words.  Carefully written in penmanship he recognized as the Golden Maknae’s.  His lips tugged themselves upwards as he read the words his young friend had allowed to flow from his heart to his hyung’s.
