Namjoon reached for a notepad and pencil. He went back to the beginning of the book and began to jot the words down in order.
“My hero, my best friend,
Big brother till the end.
“When I was but a little boy,
I was looking for my life’s dream.
Something to bring the world true joy.
Searching for something so…”
Namjoon thumbed through several chapters without finding another word. Finally, he came to the end of another chapter. A word had been written in pencil at the bottom of the page. Someone had circled it: supreme. Apparently, Jungkook had given up on trying to find that unusual word.
Namjoon leafed through the remainder of the book, but no more words had been circled. He picked up the second book in the pile and opened it at the beginning. On the third page, he found the first circled word, so he continued his notetaking.
“One day I found some true talent.
But it was so much more than that,
For I had found the best of friends.
Oh, you rolled out the welcome mat.”
With those words, this book was done. No more clues resided within its pages. He reached for the third and continued his intriguing quest.
“You have been
And you always will be
Someone so very special to me.
“You have been
And you always will be
Someone…”
Once again, several chapters passed with no results. Apparently, Jungkook had given up again, for on the last page of a chapter the word irreplaceable had been jotted down with a pencil and circled. Namjoon continued his search and found two more circled words in the book: to me.
Then he picked up the fourth book and thumbed carefully through it. This time three words had been jotted down at the end of various chapters: rollercoaster, advertised, and poster.
“You stood up to be the leader
On a crazy rollercoaster
To a life that was much sweeter
Than advertised on the poster.”
Book five yielded similar results. The words destiny and dream had been handwritten at the end of two different chapters.
“I rode a cord of destiny
To join you, friend, and your great team,
To find the answer and the path
To my life’s most amazing dream.”
At the beginning of the sixth book, the first thing circled was not a word but a number. Someone had circled the number 3 at the bottom of the third page. Namjoon paused. What could this mean?
As he pondered that question, he noticed that several words had been circled on the next page.
“You have been and you…”
Then the next words didn’t seem to line up with that set of words. As Namjoon examined his findings, he realized that Jungkook was most likely telling him to go back to the words he’d found in the third book. As Namjoon glanced back at his notes, he discovered that the message from book three began with the same five words.
A few lines into his notes, Namjoon had begun to wonder if Jungkook had written him a song. These findings seemed to confirm it. Apparently, the third book had contained the chorus. So Namjoon jotted down its lines again before continuing to search through the last book. Perhaps these lyrics formed a bridge as the first book seemed to hold both an intro and a part of the first verse.
“My hero, my best friend
On whom I can depend.
“My light in the darkness
Rescuing from starkness.
“You are my, my hero.
You are my, my hero.
My hero.”
This time starkness had been handwritten as had the last two appearances of hero.
As Namjoon sat staring down at his results, his mouth fell open. He was astounded. How long had Jungkook spent searching these books for the words he’d penned?
But then Namjoon realized there were six books. Maybe Jungkook had received some help. If each of the guys had worked on one book, it would have made the task much more conquerable.
He grinned as he stared down at this amazing gift. What a unique way to entertain him on his birthday!
Now that he had the whole song written out, he took the time to read through it and absorb its meaning. It moved his heart as he did so. Jungkook had written a song about their history together. He had communicated to Namjoon the special place he occupied in his heart.
“My hero, my best friend,
Big brother till the end.
“When I was but a little boy,
I was looking for my life’s dream.
Something to bring the world true joy.
Searching for something so supreme.
“One day I found some true talent.
But it was so much more than that,
For I had found the best of friends.
Oh, you rolled out the welcome mat.
“You have been
And you always will be
Someone so very special to me.
“You have been
And you always will be
Someone irreplaceable to me.
“You stood up to be the leader
On a crazy rollercoaster
To a life that was much sweeter
Than advertised on the poster.
“I rode a cord of destiny
To join you, friend, and your great team,
To find the answer and the path
To my life’s most amazing dream.
“You have been
And you always will be
Someone so very special to me.
“You have been

Someone irreplaceable to me.
“My hero, my best friend
On whom I can depend.
“My light in the darkness
Rescuing from starkness.
“You are my, my hero
You are my, my hero
My hero.”
Namjoon brushed away a tear as he stood up. He was going to go find the precious guy and give him a hug. But then he had a better idea.
He sat back down on his bed and grabbed his pencil as he began to jot down some more notes.
This relationship between the “little” one and the leader is always melting my heart.
