The Twenty-Seven-Year Itch – Chapter 15: The Exhilaration of Breathing

She had leaned her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes.  Then she had simply breathed.  She’d found she could breathe again.  She’d been holding her breath for so long.  But now the confining cage that had been restricting her lungs had been ripped away.  Yoongi had freed her.  And she could draw a deep breath into her lungs, feeling the oxygen spinning through her head once more.  It was exhilarating.  It was freeing.  She felt ecstatic.  She turned to look up at him.  She wanted to kiss him by way of celebration.

“Yoongi?” she whispered as she gazed up at him.   Her head was still on his shoulder.

“Mmm?” He turned towards her.

She sat up and met his eyes with her own.  Her heart pounding now, she cleared her throat.  “Can I kiss you?”

Her question shocked him to his toes.  He hadn’t expected that.  He wasn’t sure what to say.  He looked around.  “Uhhh…”

“Okay,” she nodded.  “Not here.  Yeah, I can see that.”

Would she try to kiss him when he took her back to her apartment?

“It’s just…I don’t know if you can understand this…but I can finally breathe now.  And it’s all thanks to you.  It’s been months since I was free.  Thank you, Yoongi.  Thank you.”  She smiled at him then leaned against his shoulder and closed her eyes again.

Yoongi smiled.  Today had been a good day.

They sat like that for a while, both content with the other.  Soon enough their food came.  They ate quietly, neither speaking.  But occasionally, his arm would brush hers as they shifted in the booth.  Always, his hip rubbed up against hers, comforting reassurance that she wasn’t fighting this battle alone anymore.
