It was all perfect. They had Valentine’s Day planned. Dinner, a movie, and then a walk in the park. Nothing could ruin the perfect day. But one thing…
Seongja rolled over in bed. “Ugh…Jimin…?”
“What…?” came Jimin’s groggy reply.
“Can you bring me another blanket? I’m cold…”
“Yeah…”
Jimin rolled out of bed, glancing at the clock. It read 4:36. Why so early? He sighed and went to get Seongja another blanket. When he returned, she was sound asleep again. He draped the blanket over her, brushing his finger over her cheek gently. Then he realized something. She was burning up. He frowned and placed his hand on her forehead to be sure. Yep. She definitely had a fever.
There went their plans. He headed out to the kitchen, opting to find some medicine for her before he figured out how to fix this. He had to do something. They couldn’t just skip Valentine’s Day!
Jimin opened the fridge. Then he peeked in the freezer. Excellent! They had chicken and every ingredient he needed to make her knife noodle soup. Only, he was going to make it with a Valentine’s Day twist. While his wife slept, he worked away in the kitchen on the homemade noodles and chicken stock. An hour later, he grinned down at the bubbling soup. His work of art! His labor of Valentine love.
He ladled some soup into two bowls and grabbed some chopsticks. He set them on a tray. Then he made a pot of tea. He placed it along with two cups on the tray. He was so glad Seongja had gone to bed early last night. He had headed to the florist’s while she slept, so now he didn’t have to run out and leave her alone. He picked up the crystal vase of red roses and white lilies and set it on the middle of the tray. Then he carried it to their bedroom. He set it on the nightstand and gazed down at his beautiful wife.
Even sick, she was stunning. He reached out and pulled the blanket up over her shoulders. Somehow, it had slipped down while she was sleeping. He reached out and used his finger to draw a lock of her hair back behind her ear. It had been obscuring part of her face. She shifted and murmured something.
“Sweetheart, are you awake?”
“I’m so thirsty, Jimin,” she croaked.
“Here. Let me help you sit up.” He reached down and assisted her in leaning back against the wall. Then he handed her a cup of tea.
She sipped the warm tea and sighed with relief. Then she glanced at the bowls of soup on the tray. Was that —?
“Jimin, what’s that?”
“Knife noodle soup.”
Her eyes grew large in her pale face. “Oh, Jiminie! Here!” She handed him her teacup. “Can you hand me a bowl of soup. That sounds so good! You are an absolute darling!”
He exchanged the soup for the tea.
“Jiminie!” she purred as she stared down at her bowl of soup. “You have got to be the most romantic man on the face of the planet! You made me heart noodles?”
Jimin grinned. He’d spent an hour rolling out noodle dough and cutting it into heart shapes. “I wanted to redeem Valentine’s Day for you. I had such a special day planned, and I knew you weren’t feeling well enough to go out today, so I had to improvise.”
“You, my darling, are a brilliant improv act!” She wanted to kiss him, but she didn’t want to make him sick. “Tomorrow I’m going to give you a big kiss, you sweetheart of a man!! And we can do the whole Valentine’s date you had planned. But, honestly, Jimin, this is more memorable!”
