Taehyung walked through the front door. Had he been thinking straight, he would’ve given thought to the fact that his leather car seat was soaked, but at the moment he was too drowsy to think about that. He slowly made his way to the living room but stopped in the doorway upon seeing Eunji asleep on top of Namjoon on the couch. At least she was safe…
Namjoon looked up at Taehyung, a look of shock arresting his face. “What happened?”
Taehyung motioned to Eunji. “I was at dinner with her. She told me she liked me…I had to tell her I think of her as a sister…I’m the reason she was in the rain. I suppose she came looking for you?”
“No, I saw her walking down the sidewalk. I barely caught her before she fell.”
“Oh…and now she’s sick, then?” Taehyung secretly wondered how Namjoon had been where Eunji was at that time, but then remembered he was Namjoon and was far more perceptive than Taehyung would ever be.
Namjoon nodded in response to Taehyung’s question.
Taehyung looked down at the ground. “It’s my fault…I shouldn’t have let her go out into the rain…”
“You should go change before you catch a cold yourself. I wouldn’t want to have to take care of two sick people.” Namjoon replied, changing the subject.
Taehyung nodded and headed for the stairs before turning back to Namjoon. “You better take good care of her. As her best friend I will beat you if you break her heart.” He turned around and headed up the stairs.
A chill hit Taehyung as he walked up the stairs. It appeared he hadn’t acted fast enough, and he now had a cold himself. He looked down at his soaked button-up shirt and decided it would be best to take it off momentarily. He made his way up the stairs as quickly as his weak legs would take him, attempting to unbutton his shirt on the way.
When Taehyung finally reached his room, he threw his shirt on the bed and collapsed down next to it. He considered taking a shower, but he was too tired to. He got up and slowly crawled to his closet, pulling his pajamas out and changing into them as quickly as he could. He then crawled back to his bed and pulled the covers around himself. Why couldn’t his blankets be warmer?
——————–
Taehyung woke up to the sound of rocks being thrown at his window. He pushed himself up, still feeling quite weak. He ripped the comforter off his bed and wrapped it around himself before making his way over to the window. He looked down to see Jungkook waving at him. He sighed and pushed open the window, which was quite a task considering how weak he was.
“Get ub here! But be quiet, Nabjoon anb Eunji are asleeb in the living roob.” Taehyung yelled, clearly congested.
Jungkook smiled and ran for the front door. Taehyung shook his head and shut the window before walking back over to his bed and flopping down on it. Jungkook burst through the door a minute later.
“So, what happened last night?”
“You act like you can’t text be,” Taehyung replied.
“I did! You never replied to me!”
Taehyung raised an eyebrow. He then remembered that his phone had died, and he hadn’t bothered to charge it. In fact, it was probably sitting on the floor in his pants pocket. He looked at Jungkook.
“Can you go get by bair of dress bants that’s by the closet? It’s on the floor, I think.”
“Um…ok.” Jungkook walked over to the closet, almost immediately finding the pants. He brought them back to Taehyung. “These ones?”
“Yeah,” Taehyung sat up and took the pants from Jungkook before digging through the pocket. He pulled out his phone. Then he tossed his phone on the bed and his pants on the floor.
“So that’s why you didn’t respond.”
“Yeb.”
“Now tell me what happened last night.” Jungkook sat next to Taehyung, his big, curious eyes staring at Taehyung intently.
Taehyung rolled his eyes. “You don’t want to know.”
Jungkook sat up straight in shock. “That bad, huh?”
Taehyung stayed silent for a minute.
“Judging by the look on your face and what I saw downstairs, I’m guessing it didn’t go well.” Jungkook said, studying Taehyung’s expression.
Taehyung sighed. “She tolb be she’s in lub with be.”
“What? Wow…” Jungkook paused. “Isn’t that good, though? Now you and Namjoon don’t have to argue over her!”
“I tolb her I think of her as a sister.”
“Oh…Tae…”
Taehyung suddenly broke out coughing. He bent over as coughs spasmed through him. Jungkook was now worried, the previous topic being momentarily forgotten.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah…I just ran through the rain last night…I’b fine.” Taehyung replied, rubbing his forehead.
Jungkook shook his head before looking at his watch. “All right. I have to go. I agreed to meet with Jimin in fifteen minutes.” He stood up and patted Taehyung on the head. “I hope you feel better soon. And…see you later.”
Taehyung nodded. “See you later.”
Jungkook quickly left the room, and Taehyung immediately collapsed back onto the bed. He groaned. Namjoon usually took care of him when he was ill, but since Namjoon was taking care of Eunji, Taehyung wasn’t going to tell him he was sick. He supposed he’d have to take care of himself for once. He crawled out of bed, making his way downstairs. That’s when he realized that his head was still pounding. He trudged slowly down the stairs, trying not to upset his head more than it already was. When he finally got downstairs, he made his way to the kitchen. He needed tea.
——————–
Taehyung exited the kitchen, having finally succeeded in making tea. He looked over at Namjoon and Eunji, who were newly awake.
“You guys are finally awake?” Taehyung asked, trying his best to conceal his congestion. He held his tea cup close to his face, trying to unclog his sinuses.
The two of them looked at him just as he took a sip of tea. He noticed Eunji had a glint in her eye. She looked like she was about to cry.
“Yeah, can you grab us some blankets?” Namjoon asked.
Taehyung nodded and quickly left the room; he hated the fact that he had had to crush Eunji’s heart, but he knew it was for the best. He returned a moment later and tossed a large, fluffy blanket to Namjoon before hurrying out. He couldn’t stand to see Eunji’s sad face for another minute. He headed upstairs. He still hadn’t taken a shower, and it appeared it was the right time to do that.
——————–
Taehyung climbed out of the shower and dried himself off. He was quite shocked to realize he felt immensely better. He didn’t have a headache anymore! He quickly got dressed and headed downstairs, finding Namjoon staring off into space with a saddened look on his face.
“Namjoon?”
Namjoon looked up at him.
“What’s wrong?” Taehyung questioned.
“I was…” Namjoon paused, clearly hesitant to tell Taehyung what he was thinking, but the look on Taehyung’s face made him keep talking. “I was thinking about Eomma…”
“Oh…” Tears clouded in Taehyung’s eyes and started to spill down his face. He spaced out as his most painful memory was brought back to him.
He and Namjoon were standing in front of a coffin. Taehyung held Namjoon’s hand tight, tears spilling from his eyes.
“She’s not gone, right? This is a dream?”
“No, Taehyung…she’s gone…forever.”
The tears spilling from Taehyung’s eyes got heavier, and he dropped to his knees.
“No…Eomma, come back!”
He had leaned his head on the coffin, his crying not ceasing for several minutes. It might’ve even been an hour. Just tears. Tears was all Taehyung could even think about in that moment. Namjoon joined Taehyung on the ground after a while.
Taehyung came back to the present. He looked over at Namjoon and Eunji. Eunji was now awake and looking up at Namjoon with a worried look on her face.
“Namjoon, why are your eyes red?”
“Hmm? Oh…um…no reason.”
Taehyung’s heart shattered once again, and he quickly left the room, not wanting either of them to see his tears. It appeared Eunji had already given up on ever being with him…
He ran to his room, as it was the only place he even felt slightly at peace. He let himself collapse on the bed, sobbing. He couldn’t stop the tears. They just kept coming. The pain of his mother’s death and the pain of Eunji showing affection towards Namjoon swirled together in a terrible pain. He decided in his mind that this day was by far, the worst day ever.
