Taeyeon stared at the ring on her finger.  She wasn’t sure why, but that ring gave her so much comfort.

“Hey, you all right?”

Taeyeon looked up, meeting Jungkook’s eyes.  She smiled and nodded.  Jungkook returned her smile.  He’d never seen her smile before.  She looked so at peace.  But then her phone chimed.  She pulled it out of her pocket.

“Is it him again?”

“Yeah…”

Jungkook sighed. “Ignore it.  If he tries to mess with you, he’ll regret it.”

Taeyeon nodded and pocketed her phone. “Let’s go home.”

Jungkook shook his head. “We’re going shopping.  You need some clothes.”

“But I have clothes?” Taeyeon asked, gesturing to the holey shirt and ripped jeans she was wearing.

Jungkook looked her up and down. “You don’t expect me to let you go around looking like you belong on the streets, do you?”

Taeyeon frowned. “But…you shouldn’t be spending your money on me…”

“It’s your money too!  We’re married now!  Let’s go,” Jungkook grabbed Taeyeon’s hand and dragged her out of the court house and to their car.

Taeyeon looked down at their interlocked hands.  She wanted to keep her hand locked in Jungkook’s forever.  But then they reached the car.  And Jungkook let go of her hand.  She frowned.  But then she watched in astonishment as Jungkook opened the car door for her.  No one had ever done that for her.  Especially not her most recent boyfriend.  She had believed that it was something that only happened in dramas just to please the girls watching.

Jungkook nodded towards that door. “Climb in.  Let’s go.”

Taeyeon looked up at Jungkook.  She smiled tremulously.  Then she leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you.”  Then she climbed in the car.

——————–

Jungkook and Taeyeon had weaved through various stores and had now been shopping for a good four hours.  Taeyeon had very quickly realized her complication with putting clothes on and taking them off continuously with a broken arm.  She had finally caved and asked Jungkook for help.  They now had seven bags worth of clothing in the back of Jungkook’s car.

“Are you sure this isn’t too much…?” Taeyeon asked.

“No.  Actually, it might not be enough.  But you’ve definitely stressed your arm enough for one day.  I might have you wear button-ups until your arm is healed.  They are way easier to get into with a broken arm.”

“Yeah…when do I get a real cast?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Right.”

“Wanna go get ice cream?”

Taeyeon looked up at him with wide eyes. “I’d love to!”

——————–

Jungkook watched in astonishment as Taeyeon shoved half an ice cream cone in her mouth.  There was no way this was actually happening.  He had to be seeing things.  He slowly took the first bite of his own cone.

“So is this how people celebrate when they get married?” Taeyeon asked over her mouthful of ice cream. “Because I’ve never been this happy in my life!”

Jungkook stopped eating his ice cream cone and just stared at Taeyeon.  She’d never been this happy?  They’d only gone shopping and eaten ice cream!  That was almost a weekly occurrence for Jungkook!  But then he remembered what a sad life Taeyeon had lived, and his heart broke.

“Do you want my ice cream?” Jungkook suddenly asked, holding out his cone to Taeyeon as an offering.

“You don’t want it?”

Jungkook shook his head.  Taeyeon happily accepted his ice cream cone with a grin on her face.  Jungkook decided that it was now his job to make Taeyeon happy.  It was his job until the day he died.

——————–

Jungkook had decided he wanted to watch a drama.  That was not a good idea.  He was a pile of tissues and tears now.  But thankfully Taeyeon was asleep.  She had fallen asleep minutes into the first episode.  She was somehow still asleep even after Jungkook had blown his nose multiple times.  Jungkook decided to turn off the TV.  He had cried enough for one day.  He looked down at Taeyeon, who had rested her head on his shoulder when they had started the drama.  She was so cute.  Her dark brown bangs were falling into her eyes now.  Jungkook brushed them back.  Then he gently picked her up and shifted her onto his lap.  Taeyeon snuggled her head into Jungkook’s shoulder.  She looked as though she had always belonged there.  Jungkook wanted to stay here forever.  He wanted her to know she was safe here.

——————–

Taeyeon awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of a heartbeat in her ear.  She looked up at Jungkook.  She didn’t remember falling asleep here!  Jungkook was asleep, his head resting on the top of the couch.  Taeyeon smiled.  Why did she feel so safe in Jungkook’s arms?  She leaned her head on Jungkook’s shoulder again.  She could stay here forever.  She closed her eyes.  She was about to fall back asleep when her phone chimed.  She opened her eyes again, blinking the sleep out of them.  She cautiously picked her phone up off the table.  She didn’t want to know who had texted her.  In fact, she didn’t even want to read it.  But she did anyways.

“Stop ignoring me, you idiot.  If you do, you’ll get what’s coming for you.”

Taeyeon’s face went pale.  She tossed her phone to the other side of the couch.  Then she buried her head in Jungkook’s shoulder and sobbed.  The sounds she was making stirred Jungkook from his slumber.  He instantly hugged her close and started rubbing her back.

“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?”

Taeyeon was shocked to hear Jungkook’s voice.  But it was somehow still comforting.  It didn’t scare her.  She pointed to her phone on the other side of the couch as she continued to sob.

“He…he…” Taeyeon was cut off by another sob.

Jungkook reached for Taeyeon’s phone and opened it.  The threatening text stared him in the face.  He tossed the phone to the side and rubbed her back again.

“I’m so sorry…”

“It’s-it’s not…your fault.”

“Don’t worry, Taeyeon, I’ll protect you.” Jungkook leaned his head on top of hers. “I promise.”
